To use the writing process to develop, write, revise, proofread, illustrate, and publish children’s books for a real audience, and then to deliver them to that audience – selected group of artists are the kindergarteners at Spruce Creek Elementary school, selected authors are the fifth graders at Spruce Creek Elementary school. Both groups of students will manage, create, and self-reflect thought the entire process. The kindergarten students will create a fictitious creature, fifth graders will create a storybook based on that creature. Once the books are complete, 5th graders will present the books to the kindergartners. By allowing students to write, publish, and read their book to the younger student, they are effectively teaching that student their story. It also offers a chance for students to give back to the school and form relationships with younger students at school.

What will be done with my students

Kindergarten students will complete a survey explaining what their interests are. Based on the results of the interest surveys, 5th grade will spend time writing and illustrating their own Children's book.

One copy for the author to keep, a second copy to be delivered to the illistrator at Spruce Creek Elementary School.

After the books are published, 5th grade students will deliver the books to the little illustrators. The authors will meet the illustrator they wrote for, read the book to the student one-on-one, and discuss the book with them. Emphasis will be placed on narrative structure, characterization, elements of morality/fable, and audience consideration with implantation of grade-level appropriate vocabulary.

VA.K.O.3.1: Create works of art to document experiences of self and community

Benefits to my students

This project encourages purposeful writing for an intended audience. For creative writing students, this will be an exercise in writing authentically and actually publishing for a real audience.

There are intangible benefits as well – these students get to have an older student as a role model for writing, and a memento of the experience – the book written for them.

By providing a real-life reader, their work will merit more attention and care. Alternatively, the younger elementary students will benefit from the one-on-one reading and personalized piece of literature. Both writer and reader will likely gain an appreciation for children's literature and acquire a positive association with reading and writing.
