Goal
Teaching special needs students about time can help them develop independence and manage their own time. Telling time is also a basic math skill that can help my students when we go out in the community for job training. My goal is for my students to be able to read a analog and a digital clock so they will not be late to work, know when their lunch time is, and when their shift is over.
Category
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
What will be done with my students
The students in my Transition to Adulthood class will use the learning clocks to practice identifying the time and displaying time in the written as well as visual form. Students will learn to read an analog and digital clock to be prepared in any work setting no matter which clock is being displayed.
i) SP.PK12.US.1.4c: Develop mathematical skills and/or computational fluency for everyday living, such as accessing a bank account online, money-management skills, estimation skills, time and measurement skills, and interpretation of graphs, tables, schedules, and charts.
ii) SP.PK12.US.3.6: Use effective time management and organization skills and strategies to complete class and work assignments.
Benefits to my students
Learning to read a clock can help people develop a variety of skills, including:
• Time management
Students who can read a clock can more easily follow schedules and develop a sense of structure and discipline.
• Math skills
Reading an analog clock can help students learn math concepts like fractions, patterns, and equivalency.
• Understanding time
Reading a clock helps students understand the abstract concept of time and how it passes. They can learn to visualize time, and how to count on and go around a circle.
• Patience
Analog clocks can teach my students patience and discipline.
• Awareness of time
Students who can read a clock become more aware of the importance of time.
Budget Narrative
• 14 learning clocks with adjustable hands to represent different times for 1:1 instructional practice
• Analog and digital wall clock to hang in the classroom so students can follow school schedule
• Digital clock that displays not only the time but also the day and date for students to use when completing their practice time sheets when clocking in for their job sites.
• Visual Timers increase time management productivity to help my students complete their job skill tasks in a timely manner.
• Sensory wrist timers will help the students know when their break and lunch times are while on the job site with a silent alarm that vibrates.
