Goal

This unit/project will help to educate middle school students in electrical concepts and the importance of solar energy.

Category

Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.

What will be done with my students

Students will work in small groups of 3-4 students.
By completing the Solar House Kit, each student should learn the following:
- the basics of electricity including (but not limited to) the following vocabulary: amps, watts, ohm's, volts, breakers, fuses, AC, DC, circuits, and switches.
- measure voltage, amps, and resistance using a multimeter.
- the law of conservation of energy.
- the value of solar as an energy source.

The entire project/unit/module will take approximately 10 class periods to complete.

Student learning will be measured by pre test and post test in addition to a completed student project.

THE FOLLOWING FLORIDA STANDARDS WILL BE ADDRESSED IN THIS PROJECT:
8600042 Exploration of Production Technology and Career Planning - standards
04.0 Demonstrate an understanding of the cultural, social, economic, and political effects of technology.
05.0 Demonstrate an understanding of the effects of technology on the environment.
08.0 Demonstrate an understanding of the attributes of design.
09.0 Demonstrate an understanding of engineering design.
10.0 Demonstrate an understanding of the role of troubleshooting, research and development, invention and innovation, and experimentation in problem solving.
11.0 Demonstrate the abilities to apply the design process.

8601310 Power and Energy Technology I standards
15.0 Demonstrate safe and appropriate use of tools, machines, and materials in power and energy technology.
16.0 Describe sources of energy.
20.0 Demonstrate technical knowledge and skills about electric power technology.
21.0 Demonstrate technical knowledge and skills about solar cells and fuel cells.

Benefits to my students

Students will…
- observe and test the effect of voltage polarity on motor motion.
- observe and test the effect of changes in mass distribution on motion.
- observe and test the capacity of a given motor to move an object of a
given mass.
- understand the difference between rotational motion and linear motion.
- investigate the effect of surface area/friction on motion.
- Understand the basics of solar power.
- Understand basics of AC and DC electricity
- Apply the Engineering Design Process to complete this unit.
