What will be done with my students

Every student attending Horizon Elementary will benefit from the accessibility of materials and manipulatives provided by proper storage in the music classroom. In VPK and kindergarten, students will explore a large variety of unpitched percussion instruments and movement props (MU.K.S.3.4). Students will experience more choice and ownership of these musical materials through the accessibility bins. Throughout first and second grade, students utilize these materials even more and play melodic instruments like the desk bells and choir chimes. Adding shelving units would give these students responsibility to access and safely put away these instruments. For third through fifth grade, students learn to play a variety of pitched and unpitched percussion instruments (xylophones, steel pans, tubano drums), ukuleles, and recorders. The storage spaces listed below are tools that would create independence and ownership for these various instruments, which will provide more student choice and playing opportunities in class. Currently, all these instruments sit in various cardboard boxes and old shelves in the closets of the classroom, so the teacher is not able to readily access different items throughout a class period. Creating a more efficient learning environment will help all students succeed and create music with their preferred choice of instrumentation in music class!

Benefits to my students

I strive to create the most positive learning environment for all my young musicians here at Horizon! We are so fortunate to have many instruments and modifications for all types of learners to enjoy music class. However, there is a barrier to accessing all these options during a class period because they are stored away in various boxes in the music room closets. The shelving units and instrument storage containers listed would tremendously help foster more creativity in the music classroom. Throughout our Orff-Schulwerk-styled music classes, students meet standards while also being provided with many opportunities to explore and create with different instruments and props. “The use of instruments leads to active participation. It puts control of the music in the hands of the students. They are active participants in their own learning experience.” stated by Brent Holl, Master Class in Orff 1991.
