Goal
The Sunshine State Young Reader Award books are adopted by the state each school year. Our school offers several incentives for our students to read these award-winning books. I want to get more SSYRA books in the hands of my 4th grade students. Every year we get the students hyped up about these new books, but they are checked out before they can get them, and they lose interest. I want to get these kids excited about reading like never before.
Category
Class Furniture - Carpets, choral risers, transitional seating/desks, etc.
What will be done with my students
: I will use these books during my literacy stations for students to read. Students will read these books while I am working with my small groups. I will organize my students into literacy groups, and they will have book chats to discuss the literary elements (R.1.1) of the stories they read and identify text structures (R.1.2) of the stories. Students will work on finding the theme (R.1.2) or the central idea (R.2.2) of the book they are reading. Students will work on identifying the P.O.V (R.1.3) of the story and identifying the perspective of the characters, narrators, or author (R.2.3) of the books. Students will practice (R.3.3) our most difficult standard by having them compare different literary elements of two books. Students will also practice (R.1.2) by being introduced to new figurative language to interpret in the Sunshine State Readers. Students will write summaries (R.3.2) including the plot and theme or central idea including crucial details. They will also be able to practice benchmark (V.1.3) using context clues to find the meaning of unfamiliar words.
Benefits to my students
Funding this project will provide the SSYRA books my students want to read and put them into their hands quickly without having to wait. Having multiple copies of each title will allow me to find a book for each of the students that interests them and gets them excited about the SSYRA books and cultivate a lifelong love of reading and books. It is hard to get the kids excited when our library rarely has the titles they want to read. Even with our school library having at least eight copies of each title, there is still a waiting list. My students will benefit from quality literature, rich in vocabulary, which will be found in their own classroom and are easily accessible. Following the reading of the SSYRA books and mastery of Accelerated Reader quizzes, my students will be able to reap the benefits of the incentives offered at our school.
Budget Narrative
I picked the most popular titles that the students are requesting. I included a class set for a class to use and another class set for my intervention group.
