Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 120

We thank you so much for the grant.  We now have new properly functioning aluminum flag poles.  The flags are awesome as our older flags are starting to fray and have some discoloration.  Te flag covers will protect the flags and the cap covers will protect and lengthen the life of our expensive service caps.

We take great pride in our ceremonial color guards (CGs)--we have over 40 cadets on 7 teams that perform for our program, school, and community.  For instance, we've performed 4 CGs for the Orlando Magic in the past 14 months.  We also perform for numerous local civic, military, charitable, and businesses like the speedway in front of over 100,000 people and TV audiences.  Last year we performed 35 ceremonial color guards and are close to matching that number for this year.

We also use the ensemble for our 2 competitive color guard teams that compete(d) at 3 drill meets this winter/spring time frame.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

SS.8.CG.2
Teach our cadets about proper respect for the flag and patriotism by performing color guards at numerous venues.

What will be done with my students

We present the colors--American Flag, State Flag, flanked by 2 rifles, at over 35 community service events annually. We've had this equipment for over 15 years and it is showing it's age. In the past we performed color guards numerous times at the Speedway, Orlando Magic games, Municipal Stadium, Tortugas, and for a multitude of civic organizations and at our school.

Benefits to my students

Our students practice on a quarterly basis and then perform the color guards. This instills in them a sense of pride and leadership. They have presented the colors for groups in the hundreds to tens of thousands at major sporting events.
