What will be done with my students

Lights will go across the ceiling, where there is a model of the solar system, and will represent the ubiquitous city lights causing light pollution. SC.912.L.17.8 Recognize the consequences of the losses of biodiversity due to human activity, which is altering the way animals feed and move about their ecosystems. It also impacts biodiversity and causes habitat change. SC.912.L.17.13 This will lead to discussions of the need for adequate monitoring of environmental parameters when making policy decisions, such as for sea turtle nesting.
This uses, SC.912.L.17.14 the unit on waste management strategies through recycling, waste reduction, and design-to-last. This will be incorporated by purchasing nice lamps from resale and second-chance stores. This demonstrates and reinforces a lesson in waste management. Through reusing products, it helps to remove the stigma of buying resale products, thus prolonging the life of a still-useful product. These lamps will also be used later as we model electricity usage with different types of light bulbs, SC.912.E.6.6 which is analyzing energy technologies.

Benefits to my students

Students will learn how light affects ecosystems and animals (light pollution) and is easily seen from space across the globe. "City lights" will be strung up across the ceiling between the students "on earth" and the solar system above on the ceiling.
It will also create a better ambiance in the classroom - decorating with light - imitating how lighting is used in the world.

Budget Narrative

This is a low-budget demonstration of the constant use of lighting in the world. It only requires lights and bulbs.
