What will be done with my students

Our student body will have the pleasure of seeing Mary Poppins the Musical performed live on stage in May. Few students have heard of the fictional character Mary Poppins and even fewer know and understand the story. Our ELA teachers are going to read aloud the story of Mary Poppins to their students during Literacy Week, January 27th-31st. Each ELA classroom will have the appropriate and approved Mary Poppins book to read. (Please see the attachment.) All classrooms will align their read-aloud to the literary benchmark R.1.1 to increase understanding of the text:
ELA.5.R.1.1 Analyze how setting, events, conflict, and characterization contribute to the plot in a literary text.
ELA.4.R.1.1 Explain how setting, events, conflict, and character development contribute to the plot in a literary text.
ELA.3.R.1.1 Explain how one or more characters develop throughout the plot in a literary text.
ELA.2.R.1.1 Identify plot structure and describe main story elements in a literary text.
ELA.1.R.1.1 Identify and describe the main story elements in a story.
ELA.K.R.1.1 Describe the main character(s), setting, and important events in a story.
As the text is being read-aloud, benchmark R.1.1 will be posted and the ELA anchor chart will be displayed and/or laying in front of every student as a hard copy.

Benefits to my students

The benefits include:
- Cross-curricular connections between music and ELA.
- Instruction in R.1.1 relevant to a school function.
- Providing a planned and purposeful schoolwide opportunity to engage in a read-aloud experience for the purposes of increasing comprehension, building background knowledge, and language development.

Budget Narrative

The school will be divided into two reading bands: Grades K-3 and Grades 4-5. K-3 will read the picture book and 4-5 will read the chapter book. Our Media Specialist has checked to ensure that both books are appropriate for their audiences.
Both budget line items reflect the original prices in the case that the discounted price is no longer available.
We are hoping to purchase 19 copies of the picture book and 12 copies of the chapter book.
Thank you so very much for this opportunity!
