What will be done with my students

Taking data from the first science assessment for 5th grade, the SMT1 data, the academic coach has documented specific standards in need of remediation on 3rd and 4th grade science skills. The coach will create a carnival/FAIR type environment with decorations, food, and multiple science explorations, to provide students with an engaging and memorable review of science skills. The following standards will be reviewed.

SC.3.N.1.1-Raise questions about natural world; investigate through explorations, systematic investigations and generate explanations based on experiences. (students will complete activities and write reflections in their science journal).

SC.3.P.10.1-Identify basic forms of energy-light, heat, sound, electrical, mechanical-students will participate in several hands on activities to investigate the different types of energy. Ex: heat lamps and solar beads bracelets, sound tubes to make music, tuning forks to show vibrations in water, hammer, nails, etc to demonstrate mechanical energy.

SC.3.P.8.2-Measure and compare mass of volume of solids and liquids-multiple containers will contain the same amount of water or frozen ice-students will use scales to measure mass and graduated cylinders to measure and compare volume.
SC.4.E.5.2-Describe changes in shape of moon over a month-students will create moon phases on a paper plate utilizing felt dots and white paint markers to show the different phases.

SC.4.E.5.4-rotation of earth (day and night) movements of the sun, moon, and stars are connected. Students will explore models to see how all of these components work together.

SC.4.N.1.7-Keep records that describe observations made distinguising between observtion from ideas and intervences about the observation-students will write and reflect in their science journal at every station during the science FAIR.

SC.4.P.11.2-Identify common materials that conduct heat well or poorly.-students will work to complete a simple circut along with multiple items to test to see which items conduct energy and which ones insulate. They will also work with Hot water to test items and how long it takes for the item to heat up that's placed in the heated water.

SC.4.P.12.1-objects in motion always change its position and may change direction-students will throw beanbags and balls at the carnival backdrop to show how their push causes the ball to move-and if they do not make contact with the hole in the backdrop-the object will change direction due to something causing the motion to stop. Teacher conversation will be vital during this activity-students will write what they have learned in their journal before leaving the station.

SC.4.P.8.4-changes occur in materials through burning, cooking, rusting, and decaying.-students will visit the popcorn station to observe the smells, sounds, etc that go along with chemical changes and will notice the beginning of the popcorn kernel and butter and the end result of adding heat. Students will receive their own bag of popcorn to eat while they write their reflections of the chemical change in their notebooks.

Benefits to my students

By creating memorable experiences for students, and engaging them in fun, hands on learning activities as well as written reflections, students will remediate skills that they forgot from 3rd and 4th grade in hopes of better performance on the SMT2/NGSSS state test. Because this assessments tests skills from 3rd-5th grade, teachers need new ways to review that are memorable to students and fun! The journal will be taken home by students to review with their family what they learned from the FAIR/CARNIVAL science day!

Budget Narrative

All of the carnival decorations, table cloths, and all of the activities will be saved and utilized again the next school year. The beautiful thing about this is...these standards are often the ones missed year after year, so to already have a plan in place for remediation is a win win! This theme could become a yearly celebration of learning for 5th graders and always based on SMT1 data. All items will be ordered on Amazon except for the simple circuits which will be ordered from an online science teacher store.
