Goal
Goal: One innovative way to shake up the classroom is through room transformations. Classroom transformations create immersive experiences for students without ever having to leave the classroom! The goal is to boost student engagement by taking part in an experience that connects them to the standard and makes meaning for them. The focus is English Language Arts; however, cross-curricular learning occurs throughout each lesson. The grant funds will be used for 28 ELA standards.

Unit 6 Up Against the Wild – What compels us to survive?
Supplies needed to transform the classroom will be used for four weeks for instruction on standards for grade 5 involving survival of plants and animals. Students will engage in analyzing how setting, events, conflicts, and characterization contribute to the plot in a literary text, explain the development of stated or implied themes throughout a literary text, explain how relevant details support the central idea, and summarize a text to enhance comprehension. Supplies requested for survival unit are initial cost of two background stands ($66), two winter forest backdrops ($36), table covers ($40), and tree cutouts ($55). Total: $197
Standards covered in this unit are: 5.R.1.1 Analyze how setting, events, conflict, and characterization contribute to the plot in a literary text, 5.R.1.2 Explain the development of stated or implied themes throughout a literary text, 5.R.1.3 Describe how an author develops a character’s perspective in a literary text, 5.R.2.2 Explain how relevant details support the central idea, implied or explicit, 5.R.1.4 Explain how figurative language and other poetic elements work together in a poem, 5.R.3.2a Summarize a text to enhance comprehension: include plot or theme for a literary text.
Unit 8 Water: Fact and Fiction – What does water mean to people and the societies they live in?
Supplies needed to transform the classroom will be used for four weeks for instruction on standards for grade 5 involving water. Students will engage in analyzing how setting, events, conflict, and characterization contribute to the plot in a literary text, describing how an author develops a character’s perspective in a literary text, explain how relevant details support the central idea, track the development of an argument, analyze how figurative language contributes meaning to the text, and explain how text structures and/or features contribute to the overall meaning of texts. Supplies requested for water unit are hanging cloud pieces ($40), inflatable rainbow ($25), tulle ($15), table covers ($40), and an assortment of umbrellas ($50). Total $170

Students will engage in explaining how text structures and features contribute to the overall meaning of the text, analyze an author’s purpose and/or perspective in an informational text, track the development of an argument, identifying the specific claims, evidence, and reasoning, and compare and contrast primary and secondary sources related to the same topic. Supplies requested for economic development unit are two backdrops ($75), table covers ($40), and building cutouts ($60), Total $175.

Supplies needed to transform the classroom will be used for four weeks for instruction on standards for grade 5 involving exploring the meaning of transforming matter. Students will engage in explaining how figurative language and other poetic elements work together in a poem, explain how relevant details support the central idea, implied or explicit, and summarizing a text to enhance comprehension, including the central idea and relevant details for an informational text. Supplies requested for the transforming matter unit are two backdrops ($75), table covers ($40), and science laboratory cutouts ($55). Total $170

Hosting a Book Tasting event
A book tasting event is a fun activity that can help students engage with books, authors, and genres. All grade 5 ELA standards will apply to this event. Supplies requested for this event are two restaurant backdrops ($40), red and white checkered tablecloths ($40), chef’s outfit ($30), and lights for each table ($50). Total $160
Football themed review for testing prep
An innovative way to get students ready for testing is to review standards using a sports themed environment. All grade 5 standards would apply to a review. Supplies requested are two backdrops ($40), table covers ($40), sports themed inflatables ($60), and referee outfit ($20). Total $160
Benefits to my students
The added benefit of the supplies will provide students with the complete immersive experience within the classroom. Classroom transformations engage students on a deep level, which begins to develop student buy-in. Creating a total immersive classroom fosters a positive mindset for high student achievement and growth.
