The goal of Model Mystery is for students to create and utilize models in science for visual representation, prediction, communication, and innovation among their peers. By using models, students will identify benefits and limitations of models, enhance their knowledge and comprehension, all while comparing models to real-world phenomena.

Goal

Category

Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.

What will be done with my students

These permanently integrated models will be used year-round to understand and explore various natural phenomena including earth formations, Sun and Earth-Moon system, characteristics of cells, human body systems, chemical reactions, and energy transformations for K-12 standards (SC.6.N.3.2, SC.6.N.3.4, SC.7.N.1.1, SC.7.N.3.2, SC.7.N.1.4, SC.8.N.1.6, SC.8.P.8.1, SC.8.P.9.1, SC.8.E.5.6, SC.8.N.3.1, SC.912.E.7.5).

Since these standards are covered in K-12 science at throughout the school year, Model Mystery will be for instruction, reteaching, and review. During teaching, Model Mystery will facilitate student's understanding and misconceptions about the natural world by having them create and observe models. For reteaching concepts, students can manipulate models to convey an understanding of a previous misconception. For reviewing information, these models will be used for reviewing for state tests or end of course exams.

Benefits to my students

Model Mysteries not only engages students in hands-on learning but also helps them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills by using models to explore the natural world around them. All K-12 students and teachers at Highbanks will be able to use these models to help facilitate student comprehension.

Furthermore, students will:
• learn to investigate ways in which Earth’s surface changes using models.
• learn to identify the benefits and limitations of models.
• learn to use models to support scientific theories and hypotheses.
• learn to develop models to show interactions between human body systems
• learn to use models to make predictions and explain a natural phenomenon.
• learn to identify the appropriate model to illustrate ideas and natural phenomena

Budget Narrative

Considering our lack of a conventional science lab and the scenario where students may be enrolled in multiple science courses throughout the school year, utilizing models offers a consistent learning experience within a limited timeframe.
Due to limited financial resources, not all educational materials are available on our campus, thus preventing the campus from having models for individual grade levels. My aim is to use these materials to enhance and diversify our educational tools to support student learning.
The chemical reagents for sunset in a bag are listed below: Phenol Red solution, Calcium Chloride (CaCl2), Ziploc Bag, Baking Soda (NaHCO3), Thermometer, and a Scale. These resources will be used for multiple years.
