Seabreeze High School and the Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach Community has a long-standing tradition of string excellence, even performing in London, England at St. John Smith's Square in 2019, but this tradition is no longer sustained by elementary and middle school feeder orchestras and beginning strings programs on the East side. Ormond Beach and Hinson middle schools no longer offer orchestra classes and no elementary string ensembles are currently available in the neighboring area.

The goal of our "Fiddler Crab Ensemble" is to sustain the providing of high-quality string education to our community's students by expanding Seabreeze High School's string educational outreach to include neighboring elementary and middle school students who are interested in learning a string instrument. Currently, students who are zoned for elementary and middle schools that feed Seabreeze High School must wait until high school to begin public school provided string education.

Seabreeze has already started a free afterschool string program for any interested K-12 students that meets Monday nights from 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM. We are fortunate to report that with minimal advertisement, we no longer can accept new students to our program because we do not have any more instruments in working condition of appropriate size for elementary and middle school students.

What will be done with my students

Students who participate in the "Fiddler Crab Ensemble" will select to learn either the cello or violin and will be provided with the use of an instrument and weekly group instruction on the selected instrument, at no cost.

Instruction will include the following standards:
MU:68.S.3.1: Sing and/or play age-appropriate repertoire expressively.
MU.68.S.3.2: Demonstrate proper vocal or instrumental technique.
MU.68.S.3.3: Sight-read standard exercises and simple repertoire.
MU.68.S.3.6: Develop and demonstrate efficient rehearsal strategies to apply skills and techniques.

As students progress on their instruments, we are hoping to include the "Fiddler Crab Ensemble" into our high school ensemble and perform at Seabreeze's Spring concert and in any other plausible opportunities that arise.

Benefits to my students

Primarily, students who participate will learn either the violin or cello, as well as receive instruction in applicable music theory. Students will also be provided with the use of their selected instrument. As a result of the string instrument instruction, students may experience improved cognitive function, enhanced emotional well-being, increased social skills, improved fine motor skills, and appreciation for music.

Budget Narrative

Five student violins (with bows and cases) to increase the capacity of our ensemble.
