What will be done with my students

The SLP will use the "Kaufman Apraxia – Complete Therapy Set" and "'R' Made Simple" kits with students during speech therapy. These kits will provide students with the materials to work on curriculum standards and speech therapy goals (as stated in their IEP). Students will use the cards, workbooks, and materials to help elicit correct sound productions in isolation, syllables, words, phrases, sentences, and conversations.

These materials will also support the following Florida Curriculum Standards:
ELA.2.C.2 Communicating Orally Oral Presentation
ELA.2.C.2.1: Present information orally using complete sentences, appropriate volume, and clear pronunciation.
ELA.1.C.2.1 Present information orally using complete sentences and appropriate volume.
ELA.4.C.2.1: Present information orally, in a logical sequence, using nonverbal cues, appropriate volume, and clear pronunciation.
LAFS.K.SL.2.6 Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly.
LAFS.1.SL.2.4 Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly.

LAFS.3.SL.2.4 Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience with
appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking clearly at an
understandable pace.
LAFS.5.SL.2.4 Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.
PK Standards: IV. LANGUAGE AND Literacy Domain * 1. Speaks and is understood when speaking. Benchmark a: Speaks and is understood by both a familiar and an unfamiliar adult but may make some pronunciation errors.
Emergent Reading 2. Shows age-appropriate phonological awareness Benchmark a: Distinguishes individual words within spoken phrases or sentences

Benefits to my students

I will incorporate the "Kaufman Apraxia – Complete Therapy Set" and "'R' Made Simple" kits into my speech therapy sessions with my students (PK-5th grade - approx. 85 students). All the materials included in this grant are:

The Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (K-SLP) is an evidenced-based evaluation and treatment method for childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), other speech-sound disorders, and expressive language development. The Kaufman Apraxia – Complete Therapy Set includes the following materials: Kaufman Treatment Kit 1 - Basic Level, Kaufman Treatment Kit 2 - Advanced Level, Kaufman Workout Book – 3rd Edition, and Kaufman What's In Your Doghouse?.

Kaufman Treatment Kit 1 - Basic Level- Kaufman Treatment Kit 1 teaches children to combine consonants and vowels to form words while controlling for speech motor coordination difficulty. The 225 visual referent cards were selected specifically to teach the syllable shapes that are the building blocks of speech that children need to master to become effective vocal/verbal communicators. This treatment method employs a systematic and progressive approach of simplifying word pronunciation patterns based on natural phonological processes. Use in therapy to shape and expand verbal expression and make communication easier for children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) and other speech sound disorders.

Kaufman (K-SLP) Treatment Kit 2 – Advanced Level- As with Kaufman Kit 1, the treatment methods employ a systematic and progressive approach of simplifying word pronunciation patterns to shape and expand verbal expression to make communication easier for children with CAS and other speech sound disorders. Kaufman Kit 2 uses familiar two and three-syllable words to target more complicated speech motor movements and synthesis into initial and final word positions. The 285 visual referent cards target sounds /f, g, k, l, s, sh/. Also included are blends of /s, r, l/.

Kaufman (K-SLP) Workout Book – 3rd Edition- The Kaufman Workout Book includes 16 speech motor coordination workouts to stabilize the pronunciation of consonant-vowel combinations. Use Workout Book to promote rapid development of expressive language skills while controlling for speech motor difficulty. Focuses on consonant-vowel combinations learned in Kaufman Kit 1 – /b, d, h, m, n, p, t/. The workbook activities are downloadable and reproducible making them great for home carryover!

Kaufman What's In Your Doghouse?- Kaufman What’s in Your Doghouse is an engaging, hands-on, structured therapy tool to help children with apraxia or developmental delays bridge speech motor coordination to expressive language skills. Children remain engaged as they open the doghouses in search of tokens that match their game board. During the course of the game, SLPs can target motor planning for common nouns, pivot phrases, question formulation, social language skills, and introduce syntax and morphology, including pronouns, articles, auxiliary verbs and more. With minimal preparation time, this therapy game can be played with 1 - 6 players. Ideal for group therapy, including children with different levels of functioning.

The 'R' Made Simple kit will be used with students struggling to correctly produce /r/. The production of /r/ is the hardest sound to produce in English. About 90% of my speech students have difficulty producing /r/. The R Made Simple approach is a speech therapy methodology that combines sound discrimination training, motor planning instruction, and other techniques to help students learn to pronounce the letter R. R Made Simple introduces students to the Up, Down, & Slide Alphabet. This method is easy to teach, fun to learn, and most importantly it reduces the number of contexts that need to be taught! It addresses ALL ‘R’ sounds in any word no matter the context! It overcomes barriers related to pronunciation, spelling, and dialect. Students learn to analyze words for the sound that precedes the R, and identify that sound as an Up sound, a Down sound, or a Slide sound – regardless of spelling. Each sound category has a corresponding tongue position that students learn and use to successfully execute the production of R.

These materials can be used for a variety of functions and can be used from year to year, from student to student.
