What will be done with my students
This project is designed to foster creativity, enhance storytelling skills, and promote teamwork among our students. This project will engage intermediate students in the hands-on creation of puppets and the performance of a puppet show, integrating visual arts with language arts. By utilizing a variety of art supplies, students will develop their artistic skills, practice narrative structure, and gain confidence in public speaking. Student will then perform their puppet show for primary students. Giving the primary students an examples of how students in upper grade levels can work together, have fun, put on a great production and still learn something.
This series of lessons will cover these Visual Arts and ELA standards:
VA.3.S.1.1 - Manipulate tools and media to enhance communication in personal artworks.
VA.3.S.1.2 – Use a variety of processes to develop artworks; VA.3.O.1.1 – Present artworks in a variety of ways.
VA.3.S.2.1 – Display and present artworks
VA.3.S.3.1 - Use materials, tools, and processes to achieve an intended result in two- and/or three-dimensional artworks.
VA.3.C.1.1 - Develop a visual art piece through creative processes
VA.3.C.2.1 - Reflecting on the creative process and making improvements.
ELA.3.C.5.1 - Use two or more multimedia elements to enhance oral or written tasks.
ELA.3.C.2.1 - Present information orally, in a logical sequence, using nonverbal cues, appropriate volume, and clear pronunciation.
ELA.3.R.1.3 - Explain different characters perspectives in a literary text.
ELA.3.R.3.2 - Summarize a text to enhance comprehension. Include plot and theme for a literary text. Use the central idea and relevant details for an informational text.
Benefits to my students
Students will design and construct their own puppets using various materials, enhancing their understanding of three-dimensional art and mixed media. Students will then create and perform their own puppet shows based on reading from their ELA texts and popular fables, and finally practice their public speaking skills as they perform for primary students. This project will also benefit students by fostering teamwork and collaborative problem-solving.
Budget Narrative
The budget will be used to purchase a puppet show “stage” and the materials necessary to construct the puppets. I have also included a set of pre-made puppets to assist with students with disabilities or any struggling student who may feel overwhelmed with starting construction from a blank canvas and this allow me to further utilize the puppet stage with younger students in the classroom.
