What will be done with my students

Music will involve math, personal choice and team building skills. Creating a song together with rhythm and beats to recall number order and reflect on memory with under the sea theme pieces. The students will determine first, second, third with individual instrument or group collaboration at once.
They will experience the sense of responsibility to care for beta fish and basil plants in the classroom. This will provide a larger understanding on how water is vital to sustain life and grow food for personal nourishment. They will take their plants home to share their experience with their family.
Some of my students have challenges with fine motor skills. Introducing them to various lessons other than writing or coloring will support gains through exciting functions. By weaving pipe cleaners through plastic mesh their coordination in small muscles can be exercised. The creation will be an ocean of waves, twisting, weaving and adding beads as imaginary sea creatures or shells. The pipe cleaner will be white. Watercolors will be applied individually using various amount of water to see how color can be light, medium and dark. These muscles also are incorporated into life skills such as tying a shoe, lifting and holding utensils, buttoning and zipping clothing.
Another fine motor skill will be twisting rubber bands onto t-shirts to support my student’s ability to grasp. The science aspect will involve tie dye paint to visually experience color changes with the amount and choice of colors. Making predictions and discovering the solution. Charting the difference of color on wet and dry fabric. They also will be working together problem solving with a large floor puzzle of under the sea and to reflect and recall their species.
Hand and eye coordination is also involved in this grant, and gross motor skills. The numbered toss game will provide the understanding of keeping score and determine grader and less than. Each student will receive turns and after all student participation the winner will be decided through team communication. Which student has the highest, lowest, and by what difference in sum. Math will also be the hit with a game called I SEA 10 math game to build addition and social skills. With of course a sea creature theme.
Social studies will involve individual choice of painting a flag on a small clay pot to grow basil in. Keeping a chart of how much and often they are watered. Students may choose how often and compare the growth of other peers’ selections. The teachers will also create one to do the extreme levels for student to understand the effects water can bring.
Language arts will include SPLAT rhyming words card game to enjoy learning words and or competing with peers. These cards will also be utilized to create small poems on ocean theme note pads. The short vowel sounds will be reinforced through a game called WORD SHARK ! Learning through hands on activities are a great part of differentiated instruction. The students will be engaged, and they can recall these tasks in everyday life for years to follow. Your consideration to fulfill this grant is greatly appreciated.
