Goal
Over the years, I have observed an extreme decline in students’ ability to recognize and regulate their emotions, often resulting in discipline issues and time removed from the classroom. Along with the emotional benefits of self-regulation, it is always our instructional goal to maximize a student’s time in the classroom where they can receive direct instruction from the teacher. Unfortunately, there are many students who need to learn and practice the skills involved with self-regulation; naming and understanding a feeling, utilizing a strategy to calm down, and self-assessment. It is my personal goal, as a school psychologist, to equip students with these skills and teachers with these resources to give them every opportunity to access the tools they need to be successful.

What will be done with my students
With the help of this project, I would like to host a training for teachers at Spruce Creek Elementary in the implementation and execution of ‘reset spots’ in their classroom. The training would include a background on behavior, strategies and tips, as well as introduction and implementation of the ‘reset spot’ and materials. The grant would allow the ability to supply teachers with the materials needed to create a "Reset spot" in their own classroom. The materials would include a poster identifying emotions (Standard #: SP.PK12.US.19.1a: Identify personal emotions and feelings.), posters outlining how to use the reset spot to guide students in ways to calm down (SP.PK12.US.19.4: Demonstrate acceptable ways to express strong personal feelings, such as excitement, joy, frustration, fear, and anger.), sensory tools to self-advocate for personal needs (SP.PK12.US.19.6: Self-advocate for personal needs in a socially appropriate manner.), and what it looks like to be ready to return to instruction (SP.PK12.US.19.3: Express a range of personal emotions and feelings in a socially acceptable manner.) Follow-up lessons would be provided as needed, with emphasis on those students who may have a more frequent need to self-regulate.
Benefits to my students
Self-Regulation is a crucial and necessary skill for young children. The inability to regulate emotions often results in outbursts and behaviors that are both disruptive to the learning environment as well as the success of the individual student. Having a ‘reset spot’ in a student’s classroom empowers them to learn effective coping skills in a safe way. After being taught how to use the ‘reset spot’ effectively, students can self-advocate for their own ‘breaks’ and find their own effective strategies for regulating their emotions from breathing techniques, fidgets, or simply removing themselves from the instructional environment. In doing so, instruction can continue uninterrupted for the rest of the class and the student is able to ‘reset’ in a socially acceptable manner. It is my hope, through this grant, to give our primary students the necessary skills and tools to recognize their own emotions and regulate when those emotions are extreme. The long-term benefit of these skills is infinite.
Budget Narrative
The proposed items I am requesting would involve providing 20 classrooms with a "Reset Spot Kit". (5- Kindergarten, 5- first grade, 6- 2nd grade, and 4- ESE classroom with varying grade levels) Each kit would contain the following items: A soft mini carpet, a set of posters, sensory tools, and a 5 minute sand timer.
*Plush Rug: The rug helps define the space and location. The fun colors make the spot make the area attractive and inviting and the soft surface soothes instantly so students can focus on resetting.
*Posters: Make the space attractive and inviting while assisting students in reset and regulation strategies.
*Sensory Tools: Re-setting with one of these handheld tools distracts the mind and calms the body. Proposed items in the kit include (2 different kinds of stress balls, wacky track, marble in mesh, squeeze bean, liquid motion timer, flippy chain, squishies, and sensory strips)
*Sand timer (5 minutes): Visual timer for students to use to initiate and track their time in the reset spot and suggested return time to instruction.
