Goal
The goal of this grant is to get kids active during physical education class while meeting our fitness components and physical education standards. The physical fitness components addressed in this grant include cardiorespiratory endurance, core strength, and improve balance and flexibility. The standards focused on include movement competency (locomotor skills), lifetime fitness, and responsible behaviors. Students will improve their physical ability and develop teamwork skills while working with their peers. Finally, students will learn how to use timers in various activities which will increase their math skills.

What will be done with my students
Students will participate in activities that involve hula hoops. Students will develop various skills improving their cardiorespiratory endurance, core strength, balance, and flexibility while focusing on movement competency, lifetime fitness, and responsible behavior standards. Before participating, students will learn about cardiorespiratory endurance, core strength, balance, and flexibility via class discussions (Youtube Brain Bites Clips), and/or PowerPoint slides. Students will also work cooperatively with peers during activities exhibiting personal and social behavior that respects self and others. Students will gain an understanding of time by using stop watches/timers to track their performance. Finally, students will listen to the story Hula-Hoopin Queen by Thelma Godin which is a celebration of family and community ties and staying young at heart.
1. Hula Hoop Challenge Grades 2-5 – Students will choose from one of the following and time themselves or a peer.
a. Waist up Hula Hoop: Students will hoop around their waist. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in “The Last Man Standing Contest” to see who can hoop the longest hence the title “The Hula Hoopin Queen” and “The Hula Hoopin King”.
b. Waist Hoop on Knees – start hula hoopin on your knees. Stand up on your knees without dropping the hoop.
c. Waist Hoop – Touch a Knee: Start hooping on your waist and then try to touch a knee or kneel down to the ground and stand back up without dropping your hoop.
d. Neck Hula Hoop – AKA: “The Chicken Neck”: Start the hoop on the back of your neck and then bob your head like a chicken and try to keep it going e. Arm Hooping: Hold your arm out straight and spin your hoop around your wrist – keep your muscles tight and make small circles
f. Hula Jumping: Hold your hoop in front of you and jump through it like a jump rope. If your hoop keeps hitting the ground – pick up your hands and hold it a little higher.
g. SUPER HULA CHALLENGE (for advanced students) Move the hoop around to the various places of your body...Hand – Neck – Waist – Knees – Feet.
2. Hokey Pokey with Hoops for K and 1st – Students will listen to the song Hokey Pokey and put the body part inside the hoop when it is sung. When the song states “turn yourself around” students will run around the hoop one time, then clap “that’s what it is all about”. K and 1st grade students will also use the hoops to understand what personal space is. The students will sit/stand inside the hoops to do their exercises.
3. Hula Hut Contest: This activity involves small groups of students working together to build a hula hut using 6 hoops and completing each level. One person from each group will be the timer. Together they build the hut and perform the following activities. The timer will participate in building the hut too.
a. Level 1: Build the hut 5 times in a row.
b. Level 2. Each teammate crawls through the hoop. If it gets knocked down, rebuild it.
c. Level 3: Build the hut around the shortest person in the group.
d. Level 4: Build the hut around the tallest person in the group.
e. Level 5: Build the hut and each teammate must crawl through backwards.
f. Level 6: Build a double decker (one hut on top of another).
PE.K-2.M.1.1 –Students will demonstrate locomotor and non-locomotor skills with proficiency in a variety of activity settings.
PE.3-5.M.1.1 – Students will apply locomotor and non-locomotor skills in a variety of settings while applying the appropriate movement concept as the situation demands.
PE.3-5.M.1.12 – Students will demonstrate competency in many and proficiency in a few movement forms from a variety of categories (locomotor, non-locomotor, manipulative and non-manipulative.
PE.3-5.M.1.5 Students will maintain control while hula hooping.
PE.K-5.L.4.1 – Students will Identify the location of muscles that help the body perform specific physical activities. For example, leg muscles use balance and core (abdominals) to hoop.
PE.K-5.L.3.1 – Students will participate in regular physical activity and be able to identify activities that provide moderate exercise.
PE.K-5.R. 6.1 Students will identify physical activities that are enjoyable and value physical activities for health, enjoyment, challenge, and/or social interaction.
PE.3-5.L.4.1. Students will describe how muscular strength and endurance enhances performance in physical activities.
Benefits to my students
Benefits to our students include improving cardiovascular health. Hula hooping is an aerobic exercise that increases heart rate and blood flow, which can improve cholesterol levels and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. Students will improve core strength. Hula hooping strengthens core muscles and improves balance, which can help children achieve better control over their bodies. Another benefit is students will improve their flexibility. Hula hooping helps children gain range of motion in their joints and learn to wiggle their hips and separate their sides. Finally, students will learn the skills necessary to participate in a variety of physical activities and their contributions to a healthy lifestyle. The stop watches/timers will benefit students by helping them improve their number sense. Over time, students will understand that 60 seconds equal one 1 minute. They will use technology (the stop watches) in a fun way to calculate minutes of hula hooping. Please help us to get our students moving! Physical fitness is more important now than ever before due to our diet and sedentary lifestyle. Getting our students active will benefit them in years to come.
Budget Narrative
The items requested will allow students to participate in the hula hoopin activities. We have some hoops but they are old and not in good shape. We also need a variety of sizes and shapes (flat and round). The large timer will allow everyone to track their time especially in the younger grades. Grades 2-5 will use the stop watches. We have the book “The Hula Hoopin Queen.
