Students will experience rotational symmetry by observing kaleidoscopes, creating 3-dimensional collages, and decorating and assembling individual kaleidoscopes. They will make connections between science, math, and art. All fourth graders will participate as well as some students with varying exceptionalities from grades 2-5, continuing a 6 year tradition at George Marks. This tradition has been possible thanks to Futures!

What will be done with my students

Each student will have a chance to observe kaleidoscopes and their inner workings in a setting where they can share ideas and discuss why different kaleidoscopes create different images. They will observe that all of the kaleidoscopes display rotational symmetry. They will then create 3-d collages that have rotational symmetry using a variety of folds and origami paper. Students will observe a kaleidoscope as it is assembled through the use of safeyoutube.tv. To culminate this project, each student will assemble a kaleidoscope and decorate its exterior. The students will be able to take their kaleidoscopes home and hopefully share their knowledge of reflections and rotational symmetry with their families.
This grant was graciously funded in full by Mader Southeast five years ago. Three years ago and in 2022 and 2023, Futures graciously funded the entire project. Two years ago we were lucky to have Futures and The Persimmon Hollow Women's Club fund the project. Each year our new fourth graders enjoy learning with the hands on activities that are made possible with the grants. This is my last year teaching and I certainly hope I will be able to facilitate these engaging and educational activities one last time before I retire.

In particular students will develop and support ideas from various resources to create unique artworks. (VA.4.C.2.3).

The fourth grade curriculum requires that students recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be
folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry. (MAFS.4.G.1.3) They will also be hearing and using important math vocabulary and concepts for fractions, percentages, and geometry.

Additionally, the fourth grade science curriculum will also be supported by this project. In particular Students will:
* review how light travels in a straight path until interrupted by an object.
* review how light passes through other objects (transparent, translucent, opaque).
* review how light reflects, bends, and absorbs
* observe and describe some basic forms of energy, including light, heat, sound, electrical, and the
energy of motion (mechanical).
* identify examples of these energy forms in their life and in the natural world.
* compare and contrast these types of energy.
SC.4.P.10.1

This project directly supports our school's School Improvement Plan for the 2024-25 school year.

Benefits to my students

The students will be creating Art while experiencing rotational symmetry. This will support their classroom curriculum as they will be observing and creating symmetry. This also supports the entire art curriculum for fourth grade as this project will have the students innovate, develop, connect with, and assess their individual projects and the art of others and the natural symmetry in our world. Students will experience the elements of line, color, shape, and form and the principle of balance.

Budget Narrative

Nine sets of a dozen kaleidoscope kits will be purchased so that each fourth grader can make his or her own kaleidoscope at the culmination of our rotational symmetry study. Three cubes of 3x3" note paper will be used so that small groups of students can create collaborative collages to learn the folds and practice for their individual art projects. Origami paper from three 1,000 Paper Crane kits will be used to create the individual 3 dimensional collages with rotational symmetry. The Sharpie markers are so that students can decorate the cylinders that will hold their kaleidoscope mirrors, trinkets, and lenses. With my school budget, I will supply the background paper and glue sticks as well as extra "bling" for the students to bring home. This will allow the students to modify their kaleidoscopes endlessly.
