Using special art materials, the young artists of Palm Terrace Elementary will emulate and learn about the legacies of two extraordinary black artists. They will become familiar with the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Alma Woodsey Thomas. Students will learn that the son of Haitian immigrant created paintings that sell for $110.5 million in today’s art market. And they will be taught that a retired 30-year veteran art teacher created a new painting style that had never been seen before. Becoming acquainted with how these two black artists rose to the top of the art world will instill pride, inspire students to chase their dreams, and provide reassurance that all things are possible.

What will be done with my students

The young scholars of Palm Terrace Elementary will celebrate the lives and art of black artists, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Alma Woodsey Thomas. The celebratory unit will take place during Black History month. Students will learn about the powerful impact both artists made on the art world and use special art materials to create art pieces that emulate their paintings.

Examining the lives of these two prestigious black artists, and the masterpieces they left behind, will instill pride, inspire students to chase their dreams, and provide reassurance that all things are possible. In addition, it will connect students to the not-so-distant past, broaden their artistic knowledge, deepen their visual literacy skills, and allow the opportunity to work with special art materials.
