Goal
The goal of this project is to encourage my students' exploration of the Fiber Arts. They will crochet, sew, and weave, and they will learn the historical context for appreciation of the techniques.
Many of my fifth and fourth graders have expressed a strong interest in crochet. Some of my students have already taught themselves and are excited to share their skills. However, we have depleted our yarn stores, and we only have a few crochet hooks. With this grant, my students will be able to learn to crochet.
My students also enjoy sewing stuffed animals and puppets, but last year our scissors were not up to the job, and though the students persevered, there was frustration with the tools. With this grant we will be able to design and create creatures with felt and other fabrics.
With this grant, the younger students will have the yarn and looms to learn to weave. Creating a small tapestry or doll’s blanket is always a favorite activity.
