The demographic of students we serve at Riverview Learning Center have problems with self-worth and more times than not have experienced some type of bullying or trauma. They struggle to express their emotions and need to have a positive outlet to do so. It is paramount that they can see how with time and hard work they can grow into stronger individuals.

What will be done with my students

We will work on developing a Butterfly Garden at school for the students to have a safe place to decompress when they have become dysregulated (SC.7.L.15). Each day as a class we discuss our feelings and do we need or want to change them. Our emotions can depend on how my students are interacting with each other. (SC.12.US.19.7b).

Benefits to my students

I believe that my students will be able to visit the butterfly garden and decompress. It will provide them with an outlet outside of the classroom. When a student has the choice of leaving the classroom so they can be removed from their antecedent they have a better chance of returning to the classroom. Recess and classroom activity breaks show positive association with indicators of cognitive skills, attitudes, and academic behavior and achievement.

Budget Narrative

I will purchase the above items for our outside area in order to create a butterfly garden and beautification area for the students and will plant additional plants and lessons taught through the life science class.
