What will be done with my students

After reaching out to our school’s business partners, two Holly Hill businesses will be asked to partner with our school for our 1st Annual One Book, One City. As the initial year for One Book, One City, we will focus on two pictures books which are non-fiction. Each pictures book follows state statute because the audience levels begin with PreK.
In January, our students will read Blue: A History of the Color as Deep as the Sea and as Wide as the Sky. Representatives from our business partners will visit classrooms as guest readers. They will lead age-appropriate discussions, guided by questions prepared in collaboration with the media specialist, and facilitate a STEM activity exploring the science behind the color blue. The business partner will be asked to assist with funding the necessary materials for the STEM activity.
In April, we will partner with a second Holly Hill business to read We Are the Water Protectors. Similar to the January event, guest readers will lead class discussions and engage students in a STEM activity related to environmental stewardship and water conservation. The second business partner will also be asked to contribute toward supplies for this activity.

Benefits to my students

The One Book, One City initiative will build a sense of community among students, local businesses, and the school, while enhancing literacy. This partnership model will provide a positive and enriching experience for our students and promote the importance of local businesses investing in our school and our School Improvement Plan of increasing our literacy rate. Through their participation, our business partners will help our students see literacy beyond the walls of our school and as an important life long skill.
