What will be done with my students
We have a very large garden area that has been in disuse for the last 3 years. It is located next to our Pre-K building by the large field. We have a shed to keep tools in when not in use. It was self-sustainable with an area to collect rain water and compost.
I am a Pre-K teacher at the school and have gotten commitments from several teachers as well as parents who wish to assist in the garden project. The students will be involved during their recess and we will develop a science lesson at different stages of the garden. Teachers from all grade levels obtain Monarch butterfly caterpillars in the spring. The butterfly garden section will give them a place to release the adult butterflies and hopefully they will remain for all to enjoy.
The food grown will be used to taste test in the classrooms and the excess will be sent home with the students. This will increase awareness of where food comes from, students may be more willing to try new foods and have a greater appreciation of nature.
Benefits to my students
Students will be able to see firsthand how food is grown and be a part of growing the fruits and vegetables from seed/seedling, tree to table. Students will weed, water and plant seeds and seedlings in garden Students will try new fruits and vegetable and be able to take home to show their parents their efforts. Students will appreciate what it takes to get food from the garden or farm to the table.
In addition, they will be able to see the life cycle of the butterfly and have an ecosystem appropriate to that life cycle (eg. Food plants for caterpillars, a place for cocoons to attach and butterfly attracting flora.) . Student will assist to release butterflies and be able to spend time in butterfly area to enjoy their beauty.
