Goal

Students in this class spend a significant amount of time working independently on their personalized goals. Whisper phones will support students’ reading fluency. Flexible seating will provide students with the opportunity to comfortably work around the classroom without the confines of their desk.

What will be done with my students

Students will use whisper phones to hear the sounds they are producing and the prosody used to ensure they are reading text accurately and fluently. Providing the students with flexible seating options will allow them to find a comfortable space without having another student in their close proximity. As this is a multi-grade level class, students have daily opportunities to use “choice boards” to develop their reading skills during independent practice. Having these tools in the classroom will allow them to focus on their work and build confidence in their reading skills. This activity supports ELA.K.F.1.3 (Use knowledge of grade-appropriate phonics and word-analysis skills to decode words accurately.), ELA.K.F.1.4 (Recognize and read with automaticity grade-level high frequency words.) ELA.1.K.F.1.3 (Use knowledge of grade-appropriate phonics and word-analysis skills to decode words accurately.), and ELA.1.K.F.1.4 (Read grade-level texts with accuracy, automaticity, and appropriate prosody or expression.) 

 

Benefits to my students

Many of my students have developed foundational skills quickly and with little repetition or struggle. However, they often shut down and shy away from work when they are tasked with developing new, more challenging skills. Whisper phones and flexible seating allows students to hone their new reading skills independently, in a low-stakes setting that lets them build their confidence. 

 

Budget Narrative

I will be purchasing 30 whisper phones to allow each student to have their own to use in the classroom. I will be purchasing 12 scoop rocker chairs for flexible seating. Additionally, I will be purchasing 2 storage containers for storing the scoop rockers.
