The goal of this project is to provide students with hands-on tools, like cash register drawers, to help them learn and practice different ways of working with numbers, including place value and representing numbers in various forms using real-life money concepts. By using these tools, students will develop a better understanding of counting, making change, and handling money in practical situations, while also deepening their understanding of place value.

What will be done with my students

Students will use the cash register drawers as part of a hands-on learning tool for exploring numbers in different ways. For example, having the hands on opportunities to explore the idea that 285 could also be 28 tens plus 5 ones or 1 hundred, 18 tens and 5 ones. The drawers will be integrated into classroom activities to represent money, allowing students to practice counting, place value, and basic math skills such as addition and subtraction.

It will also be offered to use the drawers within a classroom monetary system, where students can earn "classroom dollars" for positive behavior. These earned dollars will be stored and counted using the cash register drawers, giving students ongoing opportunities to practice handling and counting money. This system will reinforce both math skills and positive behavior.

Additionally, students will use the cash registers during math lessons to practice representing numbers, such as breaking down amounts into different denominations (ones, tens, hundreds) and making

Benefits to my students

The use of cash register drawers will offer several key benefits to students:
1. Hands-on Learning: Students will engage with real-world tools that make abstract math concepts like place value, addition, and subtraction easier to grasp.
2. Improved Number Sense: By working with money, students will learn to represent numbers in different ways, reinforcing their understanding of how numbers break down into smaller units, such as ones, tens, and hundreds.
3. Behavioral Growth: The classroom monetary system will motivate positive behavior, giving students the chance to practice self-regulation and responsibility as they earn, manage, and count their classroom dollars.
4. Practical Skills: Students will develop practical life skills, such as counting money and making change.
5. Engagement and Motivation: Using cash drawers adds an interactive element to math lessons, making learning more engaging and helping students stay motivated in their studies.

Budget Narrative

Budget Narrative:
To support the hands-on activities for representing numbers and reinforcing math skills with money, I am requesting funds to purchase two types of cash register drawers appropriate for different grade levels.

1. Volcora Cash Register Drawer for Point of Sale (POS) System – Grades 3-5:
For students in grades 3-5, I propose purchasing the Volcora Cash Register Drawer. These drawers will provide opportunities for students to work with larger numbers and more complex mathematical concepts, such as making change with higher denominations (hundreds and thousands). The drawers are well-suited for reinforcing lessons in addition, subtraction, and place value, as they allow for hands-on engagement with real-world tools. I plan to purchase 6units for these grade levels.

- Cost per unit: $56.95
- Total cost: $341.70

2. Lakeshore Real Working Cash Registers – Grades 1-2:
For younger students in grades 1 and 2, I recommend purchasing Lakeshore’s Real Working Cash Registers. These are age-app
