Goal
The goal of my project is to bring science to my pre-k special education students in a way that is real and engaging for them. I want to expose them to an enhanced science experience which gives them not only visual but also sensory experiences.
Category
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
What will be done with my students
The items purchased will be shared between two classrooms and will add to the students daily center routines. They will have an opportunity to explore objects in a supervised but yet independent way so they can truly be hands on and engaged in learning about life science, physical science, and engineering.
Benefits to my students
The benefit to my students would be the ability to touch on many aspects of the Florida Early Learning goals by enhancing the curriculum which is often not very engaging to our students with special needs. Adding this to our classrooms would greatly benefit our students by exposing them to new aspects of science while adding a sensory component.
The standards that will be addressed with these items are:
VI. Scientific Inquiry
B. Life Science
1. Demonstrates knowledge related to living things and their environments
Benchmark a. Observes and explores a variety of plants and animals and their environments
Benchmark b. Begins to notice the similarities and differences among various living things
Benchmark c. Explores basic life cycles
C. Physical Science
1. Demonstrates knowledge related to physical science
Benchmark a. Explores and investigates objects that require positioning and movement through play
Benchmark c. Explores and investigates the properties of toys and objects (e.g., relationship between size and weight of blocks, what makes balls bounce)
Benchmark d. Explores and begins to identify physical properties and state of matter of objects or materials (e.g., playing with sand and water, mixing paints, freezing and cooking, sinking/floating objects)
E. Engineering and technology
1. Shows interest and understanding of how simple tools and machines assist with solving problems or creating objects and structures
Benchmark c. Explores and constructs simple objects and structures with appropriate materials and explores concept of stability of structures (e.g., block building, ramps, pathways, sand, playdough and knocking over a block tower)
In addition to working on all of the standards it will teach our children to interact, problem solve, and build vocabulary which is a great need in our classrooms.
Budget Narrative
I have requested sensory materials to enhance their experience. The added sensory tubes can be used to identify seasons and colors. Our animal tubes will be used in sensory play for children to discover new objects and how they relate to different settings, like farm, pets, zoo, and ocean! All of the items purchased will enhance their language skills as they add new words to their vocabulary. The blocks will be used for engineering and will help our students to increase their problem solving skills and also learn how to work cooperatively.
The root viewer, body parts kit, and life cycles will help them to understand basic life science that they are not typically exposed to outside of their learning environment.
