What will be done with my students

My students will apply scientific skills and principles in plant science. They will build the garden beds and prepare them for plants. My students will identify nutrient requirements for optimal plant growth, their functions within plants, and nutrient sources (AG.K12.4.06). They will manage plant production facilities, equipment, and supplies with a safety mindset (AG.K12.4.07). Students will evalutate the relationship between food markets and consumer trends to make decisions in what we grow in our garden (AG.K12.6.01).

Benefits to my students

Students will be given the hands-on opportunity to experience a plant science Supervised Agricultural Experience within the classroom. Students will be able to try this project without any cost to them. As students grow and cultivate the crops from the garden, they will assist in creating employment and entrepreneurship opportunities and identify potential paths to careers in plant science. This will also lead to the exploring of employment and entrepreneurship opportunities and identify potential paths to careers in food science.

Budget Narrative

I will be purchasing numerous raised garden beds to be placed outside of the agriculture classroom. The students will build these garden beds and add organic material to the bottom of the beds to get them started. I will also purchase a large quantity of nutrient rich soil to fill the top each garden bed in preparation for the plants.
