Students will gain knowledge and firsthand experience with high-tech digital microscopes. These digital microscopes mimic the compound light microscope but demonstrate the latest technology advancements. These digital microscopes have a 7-inch display screen. In the past many students would get frustrated trying to focus correctly using the normal (outdated) old classroom compound light microscopes to view a specimen or slide but with the large display of the new digital microscopes obtaining the perfect observations is an ease and exciting. The digital microscopes are Wi-Fi compatible and can take video or pictures. I believe students would be fully engaged with this Microscope Lab and will fuel the spark of future scientists.

What will be done with my students

Students will use the latest digital microscopes that have a 7-inch display. Enabling exciting and engaging observations to be made and recorded to share to student’s laptops or on the interactive TV in the classroom. Students will learn about different types of microscopes and view many different slides pertaining to Environmental Science and Biology. Wonder and amazement will grow in the classroom with new digital microscopes.
SC.912.L.14.4 Compare and contrast structure and function of various types of microscopes.
Microscopes Lab- This will be the first time many students have used a microscope. They will need to be taught the parts of the microscopes. Make local connections! Ask local environmental organizations to come speak to students on various environmental issues and careers in their area.
SC.912.N.2.1 Identify what science is, what clearly is not science, and what superficially resembles science, but fails to meet the criteria for science. (Level 3)
• describe science as the study of the natural world and Environmental Science as the study of the environment that includes physical, biological and social science. • differentiate the criteria between science and non-science (pseudoscience): o Science criteria: testable, repeatable, replicable, sample size (10 or more), measurable and evidence based. • determine an experiment’s validity, identify bias and justify its conclusions based on: Control group, limiting variables and constants. Multiple trials (repetition) or large sample sizes. Methods of data collection, analysis, and interpretation. • describe and identify specific lab safety protocols in my Environmental Science classroom.
SC.912.N.1.6 Describe how scientific inferences are drawn from scientific observations and provide examples from the content being studied. (Level 2)
• differentiate between multiple statements that are observations vs. an inference relating to Environmental Science. • practice writing observations and inferences from the same investigation.
SC.912.N.1.1 Define a problem based on Environmental Science and design an investigation or experiment, including: observations, research topic, design investigations, collect data using tools, analyze data and organize in tables or graphs, generate results and draw conclusions. (Level 3)
• analyze the work of an environmental scientist to identify science processes. • use tools to collect data of an observed phenomena on campus using the metric system. • record and analyze data in charts or tables. • develop a student generated claim based on their observations of campus phenomena.

Benefits to my students

Students will be the first of many students with access to state of art modern technology in their science classroom. It will look CSI from the television show. I could just see students full engaged and curious about collecting data and observations fully grasping the science process.
