Goal

With the introduction of new drawing and still life materials, students will engage in hands-on drawing and painting exercises that focus on observing objects, reflecting on themselves and capturing each accurately on paper.
Currently there are minimal observational drawing materials in the classroom. The mirrors we have are old and unsafe to have out in the classroom. New supplies will allow students to once again enjoy still life and self-observation drawing.

What will be done with my students

Focusing on the Elements of Art: Form, Value and Shape, students will learn and practice how light and shadows fall on different surfaces be engaging in observational drawing. Different materials including still life props such as plastic fruit, plants & flowers, skulls and larger objects will give students unique compositions to draw. Drawing support materials including mirrors and book lights will help students manipulate lighting and observation, allowing them to experiment with how different angles affect the depth and dimension of their drawings. Students will also have the opportunity to create self-portraits as part of their still life work, using mirrors to study their own features more carefully. This exercise in self-observation encourages them to look beyond surface appearances and explore details like freckles, shadows, highlights, and facial expressions, helping build their artistic confidence and ability to understand details. Students with all levels of artistic abilities and accommodations will benefit from the materials.
The still life & drawing practice will run throughout the school year. These projects will be revisited over time, allowing students to track their artistic growth and improvement in skills, such as shading, line work, and composition throughout the year.
I will implement this lesson with 6th, 7th and 8th graders (approx. 200 students). This lesson will teach several aspects of the Florida Visual Arts Curriculum Standards.

VA.68.C.3.4 Compare the uses for artwork and utilitarian objects to determine their significance in society.
VA.68.S.3.2 Develop spontaneity and visual unity in artwork through repeated practice and refined craftsmanship.
 

 

Benefits to my students

• Learning and implementing elements of art- students will be incorporating and putting into practice the various elements of art including shape, value and form.
• Building student confidence and improved artistic techniques
• Developing observational skills
Through a classroom survey students identified objects they were interested in capturing as drawing subjects such as fruit & food, wooden objects, plants & flowers, skulls, American flag, stuffed animals and themselves.
