The Creekside AVID program aims to empower students by showcasing opportunities awaiting them in the future and opening doors along the way. What will be done with my students

The students will be touring Embry Riddle University to better understand college terminology and future opportunities. This is an attempt to increase college knowledge and aspiration. * AV.6.OK.1.4 - Articulate the importance of long-term academic plans as a part of goal setting an achievement * AV.6.OK.1.2 - (a) Know how to determine a GPA; (b) Develop familiarity with college terminology; (c) Classify the various types of college * AV.7.OK.1.1 Define key personal attributes for academic, social, and financial fit related to college selection. The students follow a tour guide through the campus and witness classes and programs all while asking questions and making connections to what they have learned in class. The students even have lunch on campus and get to feel the magic of the "community" part of college life.

Benefits to my students

Field trips are a part of the AVID curriculum. When the learning experiences are from the real world, it is easier for students to see how their new learning relates to the world around them. Field trips can provide this relevancy. This year the AVID funding has been cut, but we are committed to finding ways to provide a powerful and authentic path to help students make connections and find relevance in their learning. Though we do not have a budget to fund our required field trips we are planning necessary fundraisers and writing grants to make it happen. After these important trips, students have a better understanding of higher education; the necessary pre-requisites and requirements to achieve their goals; and an understanding of what their community has to offer.
