Books for Future Bookworms

Discovery Elementary School

I am looking for class sets of specific books to assist me in helping my students broaden their interest in different genres of text. I am implementing literature circles to engage students in reading and promote collaboration. In turn, this will help them be more successful in regard to academics. If students are given the opportunity to read engaging and new books with peers, it will encourage them to continue reading outside the classroom. Knowledge is power.

My goal is for every student to “read to learn” instead of just learning to read. I want to open their minds to all different genres of text, ones they would maybe never think to read based on the title, or the illustration on the cover.

Personal Memory Linocut Printmaking

Galaxy Middle School

The purpose of this project is to introduce students to the art of linocut printmaking through the exploration of personal memories. This project will help students develop their artistic skills, foster creativity, and provide them with a new medium for self-expression. Linocut printmaking offers a unique hands-on experience that enhances students' understanding of both the technical and conceptual aspects of art. We need these materials to provide students with the tools necessary to create high-quality prints, ensuring they have a meaningful and enriching art education experience.

Tied Up in a Bow

Deltona Middle School

The Deltona Middle School Orchestra Program has grown since I started as the director in 2021 and there are now 155 students enrolled playing violin, viola, cello, or double bass. I am so lucky to have this growth in my program, however higher enrollment in the orchestra program causes extra costs associated with maintaining the orchestra instruments and accessories. One of the most essential accessories is the corresponding bow for each instrument. A quality bow significantly enhances a student's technique, promotes greater comfort during play, and enriches the tonal diversity and depth of the sound produced. It is my goal to provide my students with a quality bow for their instruments that provides comfort for technical skills and that will invest in their musical future.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Deltona High School

Our Film Club is in our 3rd year and has grown! We have been creating short films and are now in need of professional camera equipment.

In addition, we are hoping to create light projections and purchase additional lights for our mainstage musical, The Addams Family.

Lastly, I recently attended a professional development for lights through Volusia County and would like to purchase lights to support our technical lights lesson in our Honors Class.

Aquaculture is a new program at DeLand High School. Students will be learning the basics of aquarium/ fish keeping in order to understand the overarching concepts of recirculating aquaculture. Because Florida is the #1 producer of aquacultured ornamental (i.e. aquarium) fish in the United States,
the supplies used from this grant will allow students to gain valuable hands-on experience that could connect them to this $175 million per year industry.

Readers Make Writers: High Schoolers Write Children's Books for 1st Graders

DeLand High School

: If I receive this grant, it will be my sixth time doing this project. (We first did this project in spring of 2019.)
My goals for my Creative Writers are these:
To use the writing process to develop, write, revise, proofread, illustrate, and publish children’s books for a real audience, and then to deliver them to that audience – selected first graders at Blue Lake Elementary. This process encompasses many skills, and requires a high degree of time management, creativity, and self-motivation. Unlike most writing done in school, this writing will be for a real audience - the first grader they are writing for. It is often said 'the best way to learn is to teach it yourself'. By allowing students to write, publish, and read their book to an elementary student...they are effectively teaching that student their story. It also offers a chance for students to give back to a school they may have attended and to encourage the humanitarian connection between writing and education.

For the past six years, I have had Art students involved in contributing illustrations to some of these books. My goals for these art students are to 1. Give them a chance to collaborate with a writer on an actual published project for a real audience; 2. Help them learn about working on an art project with deadlines; 3. Develop art work from a writer’s words.

My goals for the first graders are these:
Students will develop their love of reading. These students will have a book written especially for them, and this will encourage them to read it. It will be based on their interests and preferences and it will be something they can bring home and keep. Students will be able to use their reading skills to analyze and discuss their books. The creative writing students will using the literary elements of plot, characterization, setting, themes, and irony in creating their stories, so those are elements the first grade students can draw back out of the books.

A new goal for this year is to expedite the writing and illustrating process a number of ways. We are going to attempt to have the books done and delivered by Winter Break!

3-D Printer

Atlantic High School

Last year students in our FFEA (Future Florida Educators of America) CTSO attended the state conference where I was introduced to a 3-D printer. I was immediately intrigued and amazed at how engaging it can be for students. One of the Florida FFEA chapters had the printer and was sharing some of the ways they use it in their TEAL Academy. From that moment, I've wanted to get one for my TEAL teaching Academy students and FFEA chapter members.

Each FFEA chapter is encouraged to bring over 200 novelty items to share with other high school clubs at state conference. My goal is to have our FFEA chapter create small apples or something similar to bring and share with the other conference attendees. We plan and work on our submissions for over two months during lunch. It would be an engaging effort to make the items to pass out at our booth.
Also, in the TEAL Academy framework we have several technology standards/benchmarks that we explore and meet. Another goal of mine is to explore some creative STEM options in our classroom that complements the curriculum, fosters creativity and opens new possibilities for learning.

DeLand High School

The goal of this club is to support our students’ interests by building a positive culture, community and environment through high interest novels in book club. The club will provide an opportunity for students to develop conversational and critical thinking skills. Students will learn to appreciate different cultures, personal histories, values and traditions of others. They will be given the opportunities to seek to understand and evaluate different points of view. Students will discuss and analyze the texts in literature circles. Together, with teacher sponsors, teens will read texts from the Florida Teens Read (FTR) 2024-2025 Book List. Funding would support active reading resources for students so we can compete in the competition again this year. The Florida Teens Read 2024-2025 Book List has been approved by our principal and media specialist. Our students have won 1st place in the battle of the book's competition for the past two years. The team desires to continue our tradition of reading together and competing at the Battle of the Books while inviting new members into the book club.

The following BEST ELA benchmarks will be utilized as a foundation for discussion and activity surrounding the books:

ELA.10.R.1.1 – Analyze how key elements add layers of meaning/style in a text
ELA.10.R.1.2 – Analyze and compare universal themes and their development throughout a literary text
ELA.10.R.1.3 – Analyze coming of age experiences reflected in a text and how the author represents conflicting perspectives.
ELA.10.R.3.1 –Analyze how figurative language creates mood in text(s)
ELA.10.V.1.1 – Integrate academic vocabulary appropriate to grade level speaking and writing
ELA.10.V.1.2 – Apply knowledge of etymology/derivations to determine meanings of words and phrases

We had such a huge success last year, with plants growing taller than the students! I am proud to boast that HMS Ag has one of the best gardens at any school in Volusia County. We plan to add an even larger section of sunflowers and utilizing house gutters into our garden this year to plant herbs. Inkspiration

We all know that grammar can be super boring (both to learn and to teach), and we’re avoiding it as much as possible by focusing more on conversational, practical, and repetitive classes. However, some simple rules that can be summarized in short phrases help correct mistakes I’ve seen my students 'dragging' with them over the years. I never get tired of repeating them, and I never will. But I believe it would be very valuable to find fun ways to help my students remember those little rules that make a big difference.

Calling All Martian Colonists!: Inspiring High Schoolers with 'The Martian'

University High School

Many of our students are struggling readers, some of whom have yet to pass their required reading tests for graduation. We hope to kindle an interest in reading for our students by reading a book that meshes with our curriculum. We hope to support the work being done in the reading and ELA classrooms to help those teachers as well as our students. Research has shown that utilizing novels from other subjects enhances learning and improves comprehension for students.
We specifically chose The Martian for its look into a possible future. We live just outside the Space Coast, an area which is seeing a rebirth and has considerable resources pouring in for the foreseeable future. The question of when we will send a human to Mars could be resolved within our student’s lifetime. The Martian doesn’t just focus on the astronaut Mark Watney, who is not only a botanist by trade but also an engineer, it also focuses on how many people from all different backgrounds work together to help him survive. When we read the Martian we plan on discussing various ways humans can be a part of the space program, not just as astronauts and not just at NASA.
There are countless news stories about companies going into space (look at how much time Boeing has been in the news recently and the debates that have been brought up regarding their program alone!). It is relevant, it is going to affect their lives, and it could inspire them to a future they didn’t think existed or possible.

Fiddler Crab Ensemble

Seabreeze High School

Seabreeze High School and the Ormond Beach/Daytona Beach Community has a long-standing tradition of string excellence, even performing in London, England at St. John Smith's Square in 2019, but this tradition is no longer sustained by elementary and middle school feeder orchestras and beginning strings programs on the East side. Ormond Beach and Hinson middle schools no longer offer orchestra classes and no elementary string ensembles are currently available in the neighboring area.

The goal of our 'Fiddler Crab Ensemble' is to sustain the providing of high-quality string education to our community's students by expanding Seabreeze High School's string educational outreach to include neighboring elementary and middle school students who are interested in learning a string instrument. Currently, students who are zoned for elementary and middle schools that feed Seabreeze High School must wait until high school to begin public school provided string education.

Seabreeze has already started a free afterschool string program for any interested K-12 students that meets Monday nights from 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM. We are fortunate to report that with minimal advertisement, we no longer can accept new students to our program because we do not have any more instruments in working condition of appropriate size for elementary and middle school students.

Ceramics is Fired Up and Kil'n It at Taylor Middle High

Taylor Middle-High School

I am implementing this project because I want my students to understand the process of Raku Firing. Raku firing is an ancient Japanese ceramics technique, dating back to the 16th century, that creates a unique finish to your pottery pieces. The Raku method is a lot quicker than the typical kiln fire that takes up to 24 hours between heating and cooling, the Raku method takes 2-3 hours. The ceramic pieces are pulled from the kiln when they are still glowing red and placed in a metal container filled with sawdust or newspaper. The oxygen begins to get smothered out and that is where the fun stuff happens, creating various colors on the clay pieces where the glaze was, if no glaze was applied it stays matte black. I need specific materials such as: glazes made especially for this technique, metal trashcans, safety helmets, long metal tongs, and wash bins which students will use when they participate in a Raku firing.

Magnifying the Miniscule but Magnificent Florida Wildlife- A Science Integrated Year for Artists!

Some of the things we will be studying are very small- insects, shells, leaves, and much more. For students to be able to see the incredible detail in these small things, and then draw/replicate in an artwork, these microscopes will give students the ability to not only see their objects larger-but photograph them, save the image, and then I can print the images out for their later use. With this project, I hope to show students the value of the wildlife that is all around us locally and in Florida specifically. Reset in Progress! Find your calm.

Spruce Creek Elementary School

Over the years, I have observed an extreme decline in students’ ability to recognize and regulate their emotions, often resulting in discipline issues and time removed from the classroom. Along with the emotional benefits of self-regulation, it is always our instructional goal to maximize a student’s time in the classroom where they can receive direct instruction from the teacher. Unfortunately, there are many students who need to learn and practice the skills involved with self-regulation; naming and understanding a feeling, utilizing a strategy to calm down, and self-assessment. It is my personal goal, as a school psychologist, to equip students with these skills and teachers with these resources to give them every opportunity to access the tools they need to be successful.

Our goal for this year is to reach a larger number of EWS students through a more systematic and consistent mentoring approach. Ms. Stemberger LaRussa and I collaborated over the summer to create a “playbook” for mentors. This year, approximately 40 staff members are volunteering to mentor 50 EWS students. Southwestern Middle School

Our goal is to integrate Ms. Langston’s VE Modified students within Mrs. Campbell’s Advanced Theatre students to create an all-inclusive project, to create a short fairy tale story. Both teachers will collaborate to build multiple teams following Kagan strategies. By using Kagan strategies and cooperative learning methods, it will structure each group for success and ensure equal participation with simultaneous interaction. Once teams are built, the groups will work together through multiple phases to write a short fairy tale story. They will combine ELA strategies, theatre strategies, multimedia tools, and other materials to edit and produce their self-made, all-inclusive masterpiece. This project will allow all students the opportunity of a hands-on experience to creatively dive deeper into the Theatre, ELA and SEL standards. It will also provide them with a real-world application of ELA/Reading standards combined with the SEL (social emotional learning) skills that align with the realities of future professions.

The goal of this project is to encourage my students' exploration of the Fiber Arts. They will crochet, sew, and weave, and they will learn the historical context for appreciation of the techniques.

However, we have depleted our yarn stores, and we only have a few crochet hooks. With this grant, my students will be able to learn to crochet.
My students also enjoy sewing stuffed animals and puppets, but last year our scissors were not up to the job, and though the students persevered, there was frustration with the tools. With this grant we will be able to design and create creatures with felt and other fabrics.
With this grant, the younger students will have the yarn and looms to learn to weave. Creating a small tapestry or doll’s blanket is always a favorite activity.

Mind and Motion Project

Friendship Elementary School

Incorporating mindful cooldown/movement at PE has many great benefits for students at any age and any grade level. Mindful cooldown or mindful movement will include breathing and stretching exercises. Incorporating this into a physical education program can help with increasing mindfulness, body awareness, improve balance, and flexibility. More importantly, it helps provide a more enhanced mental energy, stress management and relaxation, release stagnant energy, it helps improve mood, and helps students improve with much needed concentration and focus (especially going back to class). Mindful cooldown/movement, benefits and reaches all ages and a diverse range of students, mentally and physically. I would need yoga/floor mats and a cart to keep the mats in to be able to wheel them from the equipment room to the PE pavilion to help implement this program. This program will be held outside on the PE pavilion (as PE is always outdoors for elementary) for the final 10-15 minutes of PE class. The yoga mats helps so the students can have their own space and to be sure to be comfortable and safe while performing certain movements and stretches. The mats must also be thick enough, but not too thick so that they do not lose their balance at this age, and a material that will hold from much usage, yet, safe for every student.

Music Makers: Safe Sounds for Special Learners

Champion Elementary School

In elementary schools around the country, our special education students face unique challenges that require tailored educational approaches. Traditional music instruments and resources often pose safety risks due to these students' tendency to put objects in their mouths to orally explore them, drop things due to certain motor skill issues, or simply throw them when they are in sensory overload. This limits their engagement and can inhibit their ability to fully participate in music education.
Research shows that music education can significantly benefit children with special needs by enhancing cognitive development, motor skills, and emotional well-being. However, to maximize these benefits, it is crucial to use materials that are specifically designed to be safe and engaging for this population. Currently, our music program lacks such resources, which is why I am seeking funding to acquire specialized music toys and manipulatives.
By addressing this need, I hope to create a more inclusive and stimulating l

It's Not All Fun and Play-DOH!

It is an activity students are already familiar with, can use without any specific instructions, and used for any relating subject topic. I would like to implement more use of playdoh in my classroom and across Kindergarten as a grade level. Playdoh helps develop fine motor skills that a lot of the incoming kindergarten students are lacking due to lack of school exposure. They may also be lacking these skills because playdoh, pencils, crayons, and scissors may not be accessible in their home. Playdoh can encourage creativity and imagination along with social skills. Playdoh allows children to communicate about what they are making, asking for a tool another student has to share, and building relationships with one another.

I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for STEAM!

Indian River Elementary School

STEAM manipulatives and centers play a crucial role in the classroom, offering a wealth of benefits for student’s development and learning. Here are some reasons why we would like to incorporate these STEAM manipulatives and centers into our classroom:
1. Problem Solving: Building toys encourage problem-solving skills. Children learn to plan, experiment, and find solutions as they construct and deconstruct structures.
2. Imagination: Through building, children can follow their own plans or collaborate with peers to create something beyond their individual imagination. It fosters creativity and innovation.
3. Self-Expression: Blocks and other building materials provide avenues for self-expression. Dual language learners can explore and demonstrate their understanding across languages.
4. Mathematics: Concepts like length, measurement, comparison, number, symmetry, and balance are practiced during block play. It’s a hands-on way to reinforce mathematical skills.
5. Continuity and Permanence: Block creations can stand for an indefinite period, engaging spatial sense and motor abilities.
6. Creativity: Children freely combine and recombine loose parts, fostering creativity. The open-ended nature of building materials allows for endless possibilities.
7. Science Exploration: Blocks provide opportunities to test hypotheses and build scientific reasoning. Children learn through hands-on experimentation.

Discovering and Inventing with STEM Boxes

Tomoka Elementary School

I plan to implement a project for Science and Math exploration/discovery time. I intend to create “STEM” activity boxes. Student STEM boxes will include materials needed to complete twelve (or more) discovery activities which involve Science and Math learning. Most of the materials contained in the STEM boxes are reusable and therefore, can be used for future classes. Kits will be stored in one classroom, but available for other third grade teachers to implement in their own classrooms.

Learning With LEGOS

Atlantic High School

The goal is to increase engagement and communication skills in students by providing them hands-on experiences through the use of Lego sets to retell stories. According to the Division of Early learning, reading books and telling stories are important ways to support young children’s communication and language skills. Children need to have opportunities to practice communication skills in many interest areas in their learning environment. Children communicate and interact with adults and peers during unstructured play, participation in simple scientific inquiry experiments, painting and creating art, and asking and answering questions about their exploration and discoveries in their environment.

Mrs. Paul’s Anchor Charts in Secondary Science

Heritage Middle School

There are several different types of learners in my classroom, but what I have discovered is that my students benefit best from small group activities that then translate into whole group activities. I want my students to be able to work together to review topics I have taught and create visual charts that will become a part of our classroom. I expect that these visual anchor charts will improve district assessment scores as students will have ownership in it.
