Walton Education Foundation

To begin, we measure student growth using an online summative assessment called, STAR Literacy. Students take this online assessment four times throughout the year. In August 2016, my class average Scale Score was 107. In other words, only 55% (11 out of 20) of my students tested on grade level. Ultimately, my goal is to increase student achievement through providing differentiated instruction through technology integration and collaboration with their peers. Specifically, my goal is to increase my class average Scale Score by 125 points, in order to show a year's worth of growth. By May 2017, my students will increase their average Scale Score to 232.
Additionally, the approval and support of this grant will accomplish the following Florida Standards:
LAFS.1. RF.3.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
LAFS.1.RF.4.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. a. Read on-level text with purpose and understanding. b. Read on-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings. c. Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.
LAFS.1. RL.4.10 With prompting and and support, read narrative text of appropriate complexity for grade 1.
LAFS.1.W.2.6 With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

As a result of the technology support from this grant my students increased their average Scaled Score, according to our Standardized Measurement Tool: STAR, from 107 average to 211 average.  My students were able to increase their average score by 104 points, which is a significant amount of growth. Although my goal was to increase the average Scaled Score by 125 points, the 104-point increase reflects their gained knowledge.  These six and seven year olds have learned independent as well as collaborative learning strategies in a technology rich environment.  Furthermore, the student’s capacity to complete independent research increased as a result of the available technology.  Below I have attached some photos of a Shared Research Biography project that students conducted completely independent.  They were required to gather information using a variety of media and their successes were reflected inside their final products.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

LAFS.1.RF.4.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. a. Read on-level text with purpose and understanding. b. LAFS.1. RL.4.10 With prompting and and support, read narrative text of appropriate complexity for grade 1.
LAFS.1.W.2.6 With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.

What will be done with my students

First, students will utilize the Raz-kids application to read differentiated text, at their personal learning level. Furthermore, the Raz-kids application also supports phonics skills through text exposure and the extension called, HeadSprout. The differentiated, or layered, instructional support based on each child's reading level and phonics level will maximize student achievement. In short, the Raz-Kids application will accomplish the Florida Standards: LAFS.1.RF.3.3, LAFS. 1. RF.4.4, and LAFS.1. RL.4.10
Second, students will also access Edmodo in order to complete assessment tasks that support reading comprehension and phonics skills. Edmodo will provide accountability for students to achieve tasks on grade level texts that will increase student achievement. In short, the Edmodo achieves the Florida Standard: LAFS. 1. W.2.6.

Benefits to my students

In conclusion, my classroom layout requires phonics skills, reading skills, and comprehension skills to be introduced in whole group, rehearsed inside small group, and successfully practiced independently.
In summation, the integration of technology would support the approach of tiered instruction by allowing students to access differentiated text, whilst providing the accountability necessary to effectively monitor student achievement.
