Walton Education Foundation

My goal is to increase my student's STAR Enterprise Reading scores by instilling a love of literature with each of them. Fifty percent of my students ranked below the fifty percentile mark on their last STAR assessment. Essentially, this means that half of my class is performing just at or below their grade level expectancy. As the old anecdote states, practice makes perfect. With an increase of classroom books for my students, I expect to see an increase in reading skills. The goal I have set for my students is to have at least 75% performing above the fifty percentile mark. My goal is to create individualized book bins for each student in my class. These books will be chosen with the intention of providing just enough challenge that students’ reading abilities will grow!

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 19

Thanks to our personalized classroom library, our class saw a major increase in literature exposer! Student's scores in the class went up over all, with 78% if students score at or above the 50% mark on their STAR Reading assessment. I was able to meet my original goal of 75% thanks to the increased reading time allowed by my classroom library! Students over all developed a greater love of reading fostered by the increase of books into our classroom. Students also esperienced an increase in variety of texts they were exposed to ranging from fairy tale fiction to informational nonfiction, all of which they are tested on each year. I believe the impact of this grant has truly transformed my students into a class of little literature lovers!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

There are eighteen students currently in my class. I hope that this project will have a positive effect on all 18 of my students. However, nine of my students are in immediate need of reading intervention, so they are the main motivation for this project. These materials will be used with all my future students to come into my class. I will be able to rearrange the materials to suit any new students I will have. Students will use their individual library for independent reading time, book studies, and to apply learned reading skills. My goal is to have an individual book bin for each student. The bin will contain books picked specifically to match the students’ individual reading level and interests. I will rotate books periodically to keep students engaged and entertained. Students will have constant access to these book bins throughout the year!

Benefits to my students

While I hope that all 18 of my students will benefit from this project, my main focus is increasing STAR Enterprise Reading scores for my lowest 9 students. I hope that through this new reading incentive to raise these nine students to at least the 60th percentile on their STAR assessment. While my current goal reflects my 2017-2018 class, I believe I will see benefits to all of my future students to come. Students will use their book bins to practice fluent reading, gain a richer vocabulary, and apply reading skills taught in class. These practices will reflect positively on their assessments.
