Walton Education Foundation

This grant will give more students the ability to use technology daily in order to receive explicit online instruction on the skills that they are struggling with. The programs that we utilize on the computers and iPads on a daily basis are Zearn and Compass Learning. Zearn is a math program with lessons and activities that align with our math curriculum. I have the ability to assign students the specific lessons that they struggled with. Compass Learning is a program that provides each student with an individualized plan to teach the skills that they are struggling with. Each student's data is uploaded from their STAR reading and math scores every 9 weeks to provide a plan addressing their individual needs. Due to the individualized nature of these technology programs, there is not a certain standard that will be addressed. Instead, each student will be receiving instruction to meet the standards that they are struggling with. Overall, the class will be working to meet all of the English Language Arts standards. Students who are advanced will also be working on standards from higher grades. The objective of this grant is that all students, low performing and advanced, will make gains on their STAR scores due to increased access to the researched-based technology programs that meet students individualized academic needs.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 18

The computers that were donated to our classroom have benefited students. According to the STAR Reading and Math Assessment, all 18 students had positive academic growth in the standards that they were struggling with from the time that the computers were implemented. All 18 students are considered to be on or above grade level. With these computers, students were able to utilize the programs Zearn and Compass Learning more frequently, usually once a day. We also used the computers for online review games, such as Kahoot, as you see pictured. Having these additional computers allowed students to be able to work with partners on technology, instead of in a large group. Thank you so much for your contribution to our class!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

This grant will give more students the ability to use technology daily in order to receive explicit online instruction on the skills that they are struggling with. The programs that we utilize on the computers and iPads on a daily basis are Zearn and Compass Learning. Zearn is a math program with lessons and activities that align with our math curriculum. The objective of this grant is that all students, low performing and advanced, will make gains on their STAR scores due to increased access to the researched-based technology programs that meet students individualized academic needs.

What will be done with my students

We have 4 computers and 3 iPads in our classroom. At least twice a day a few students use technology devices for each of the mentioned programs. Currently, each student is only able to use these programs once a week due to the limited number of computers. This grant would enable all 18 students to use these programs daily or every other day, instead of only once a week. The computers will be used for students to practice math skills on Zearn at the end of our math block. Nine students will have the ability to utilize the technology for this program for 20 minutes each day. At the end of our reading block, the low performing students who attend iii will use the computers to practice the individualized standards that they need to master on Compass Learning for 30 minutes. Seven students will be using the computers at this time. During iii time ten students will be able to use Compass Learning to practice the standards that they need to master for their plan. They will be on Compass Learning for 30 minutes each day.

Benefits to my students

This project will be evaluated after every STAR test in order to determine if each of the 18 students made learning gains on the standards that they were struggling with. This grant will impact all 18 students in the classroom. These computers will also be reused for years to come impacting at least 18 students every year.
