Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
St. Joe Community Foundation - $1,480.00
Our project goal is 1) to be able to write on demand without waiting for a computer or computer lab to become available and 2) to provide at least half the class the ability to write, while the other half does seat work or reading, . These computers would be used in Miss Simpson (who teaches Math and Science) and my classrooms (I teach Social Studies and Language Arts).
Writing is such an important part of a fifth graders Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies life! 1) Our school and grade level expect a minimum of three writing projects a quarter. While the old-fashioned write with pen or pencil on paper still works, students are becoming increasing dependent on computers for school-work. Having Microsoft 365 availability to our students, allows them to work on their writing assignments from home, without the worry of having a flash drive. 2) Students can also use the computers for other subjects, like Social Studies, Science, and Math. Miss Simpson is the peanut butter to my jelly--she teaches Math and Science and I teach Language Arts and Social Studies. She is across the hall from my classroom and we share the same kids 3) In Science and Math, the students will use the computers for research, writing, projects, and classroom activities.
The benefits to having more lap tops in the classroom are: 1) No more waiting to use computers or computer labs in a 1000+ Middle School; 2) Using the newest and fastest computers available at the given price; 3) Faster turn-around on writing assignments and potentially better writing scores; 4) More writing practice means potentially better Writing Scores on the Florida Writing test in the Spring of each year; 5) Students can use the products at their desk and are not confined to a given area; 6) Better writers mean better readers, according to research; 7) Improved STAR and FSA scores in Reading, Writing, and Math (as well as FCAT Science) with more available computers; 8) Computers can also double as tools for our ELLs to do remedial work when we are not writing; 9) Our professional observations has shown that students on computers are more confident writers; and 10) Having these eight laptops will allow for small group instruction with class, whether we write or not.
