At the beginning of each school year, my students take the STAR Reading Assessment to measure their ability to read. Based on my students’ performance this school year, 14/18 students, or 78%, are performing below grade level – measured by their GE (grade equivalency). This indicates that 22% are at/above grade level, for reading. My goal for this year is to increase that proficiency level to 70% at/above grade level. To achieve this goal, we will be working on the following foundational standards during whole group and small group reading instruction: LAFS.1.RF.1.1, LAFS.1.RF.2.2, and LAFS.1.RF.3.3.
Students are given many opportunities to use technology in my classroom, specifically during small group reading instruction.
Based on our school improvement plan for this year, students are expected to complete 40 minutes of Compass/Pathblazer per week, focusing on reading skills. This is a computer program that targets instruction to the needs of each student, based on their performance on STAR. The individualized instruction provided by this program will increase students’ ability to read, as well as build comprehension skills. It is my goal to provide students additional time on this program, given the appropriate technology.
Additionally, students with language barriers will be supported with Imagine Learning, a computer program used to strengthen their English-language speaking skills. This program will benefit at least five students in my class this year.
All students in my class are provided rigorous instruction of reading skills in a whole group setting. During small group, these standards are revisited and scaffolded by the teacher and through independent work. By using the computer programs mentioned as the independent component, students are able to practice what has been taught whole group and build on the skills they have previously been taught.
Student data will be evaluated using the STAR Reading Assessment, which will be given for the final time in spring (April 2019). Since my overall focus is on foundational reading standards, I will analyze the state standards report from STAR at each of our testing periods. I expect my students to have increased to the 70% proficiency on the final test. Student conferences will be held between each test to make students aware of the progress they have made each time.
