What will be done with my students

Breakout Bonanza
My partner and I have been teaching 6th grade science for several years at Walton Middle School. In our struggle to keep students engaged in their learning, we are always looking for new and interesting ideas. In a workshop at our EPIC day this year, we met with Joan Kennett, the Walton County School District Teacher of the Year. She shared with us an awesome idea called “Breakout Boxes”. The idea is to have kids engaged and having fun while still learning and reviewing instruction. This could be used with any subject area, but it especially would lend itself to reviewing science concepts.
We all know that students, at this time in their lives, love to play games and solve puzzles. These boxes allow them to do both while still engaging in the learning process. The boxes consist of a plastic toolbox which is locked. In order to gain access, the student must answer questions about a specific topic while researching / reviewing the material. There are numerous locks involved that allow students numerous opportunities to access their box. These work like an escape room in which students must collaboratively work to find solutions to each individual lock before progressing to the next. We would like to have enough money to purchase a set of 10 boxes for each of our classes for a total of 20 complete boxes to include numerous locks and puzzles pieces.
These breakout boxes would help us cover all of our 6th grade Science FSA standards because it would help us review all material we teach. It would reach all 6th grade Walton Middle School students which currently is around 260 kids. These types of activities would take place throughout the school year to include at least once per nine weeks. It is our goal and hypothesis that using these boxes will boost our students test scores on their classroom tests as well as the science FSA that they will take in the 8th grade.
