Walton Education Foundation

As my grant title states, receiving these three additional iPads would allow my class to reach a one-to-one technology ratio, meaning that each student would have their own device. This has been my goal for my classroom since I began teaching. The Walton Education Foundation and their wonderful community partners have made this goal possible, as I have received two to three devices each year from grants such as this one.
I have the goal of reaching a one-to-one classroom because it provides so many opportunities and possibilities for my students. My main focus is always the learning gains of each and every one of my students. With that being said, I will use the one-to-one technology to meet the needs of all of my students, from the English-language learners to the students in the gifted program, and students in between. Having a device for each student allows us to utilize programs tailored to meet the needs of each student. It also allows for immediate feedback and teacher intervention.
As I said, student learning gains and student growth are my main priority; therefore, the goal that I will be measuring to prove the effectiveness of this grant is that my students will increase their Student Growth Percentile (SGP) Score by 40 points or greater. I will be using the STAR Math Enterprise Assessment, taken four times each year, as my indicator for this goal.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 36

Thank you so much for funding our grant for our classroom to receive 3 new iPads and cases! This will help us tremendously! Unfortunately, we had some difficult circumstances and I just received the iPads, so my students were not able to use them this year. The check was lost in the mail and due to COVID-19, I didn't receive the iPads until after the students left for summer. As soon as I received them, I got them all set up for next year's students. I am so excited for them to use them and finally have, depending on my class size next year, a ratio of one-to-one devices. These devices truly will mean so much to our classroom, and I cannot thank you enough!

What will be done with my students

As of right now, my class has 14 technology devices. I have 17 students in each of my two classes. These additional three iPads would allow my students to each have their own device. We would utilize these devices in a small group setting and whole group setting. We currently use a schedule to share devices. However, at least twice a day, during small group or intervention time, students receive about 15 minutes to utilize programs that will benefit their specific learning needs. Having a one-to-one technology ratio would allow this to happen more often. Some of the technology programs that would be utilized more often with one-to-one technology are as follows.
During small group math time every day, students use the technology program Zearn. Zearn aligns with our Walton County math curriculum, Engage New York. The program allows for me to assign specific lessons to certain students based on their learning needs. For example, if I know that a student struggled with a certain lesson, I can assign that lesson for them to work on. I can assign my struggling students lessons from lower grades or challenge my high students with lessons from upcoming grades.
Another program that we use regularly is Compass Learning Reading and Math. This program aligns each student according to their STAR assessment that I previously mentioned. It assigns them lessons based on skills that they are struggling with, according to the STAR test. These skills could be a first grade skill or a sixth grade skill, depending on the learning needs of the student.
Some programs that the English-language learners utilize are Imagine Learning and Google Translate. Imagine Learning is a researched-based program that teaches language acquisition skills in an engaging way. I utilize google translate to scan my assessments and translate into my student's native language for them to be assessed on what they truly know. I currently have three students who do not speak any English. I only have 2 iPads that are new enough to download and utilize the Google Translate app. An additional iPad would be extremely beneficial for my English-lanugage learner students to have access to the programs they need.
In addition to the increased use of these programs during small group time, these iPads would also be used during whole group time. An engaging way that I would use them during whole group is to play Kahoot! Kahoot is an interactive game that is used to review material before an assessment. Currently, we have to share devices and work with a partner to play this game. However, if each student had their own device, I could see each student's knowledge of the material before the assessment, and re-teach as needed.
Additionally, if each student had their own device, I could administer assessments through technology, allowing for immediate results and feedback to the students.

Benefits to my students

Our classes will benefit from additional technology devices so that students can visit the previously mentioned programs during small group and intervention time more frequently. The individualized nature of these programs will benefit all 34 of my students from the struggling students to the students above grade level. I have utilized these programs the last two years and observed that all students dramatically increased their STAR SGP scores. The devices will also allow English-language learners to receive the assistance that they need through programs such as Imagine Learning and Google Translate. Finally, these devices will bring about the most dramatic impact during whole group time. Having a one-to-one technology ratio during this time will allow me to see immediate feedback of my student's knowledge and intervene before assessments to meet their needs. This grant will continue to benefit the individual learning gains of my students every year. I am so excited about the possibility of reaching my goal of having a one-to-one classroom.
