Walton Education Foundation

My school prides itself upon academic success, and we realize that the foundations of that success come from a strong foundation of reading skills. Unfortunately, what we are finding is that some of our students have gaps that have not yet been filled when it comes to their basic skills in reading.

Even though at our school, we have educators who put lengthy hours into planning rigorous lessons, and tiered instruction we often find that it just isn't enough. The state of Florida has a multi-tiered system of supports for all students that provides quality instruction as well as supports to match the needs of all students. All students receive high quality core instruction. This is identified as Tier 1 instruction. Students who need extra support in order to be successful in reading are identified as Tier 2 students. These students receive more targeted instruction based on specific needs daily.

Upon our research and talking with our district reading coach, we expressed our concerns and she introduced us to the Sonday System. The Sonday System is a systematic system that is broken into four parts, the first part is the Sonday System LPL for preschool through kindergarten students, the second is the Sonday System 1 which is for beginning readers, the third part is Sonday System 2 that is geared is for intermediate readers, and the Sonday System E which is for grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Throughout the Sonday System each day students are exposed to the big five components of reading; which includes phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

At our school, we were very fortunate to have one Sonday System 1 donated for us to use with our students who are significantly below grade level; however we see students who are quickly moving from a beginning reader to more of an intermediate reader. This is where the need for the Sonday System 2 comes into place. After the students have tested out of the Sonday System 1, we need a resource that will fill the needs of these students. Sonday System 2 is a wonderful follow-up. Sonday System 2 offers structured, systematic, multisensory reading intervention that provides Tier 2 students with the reading skills necessary to become successful in not only reading but all subjects that require reading. Consistency is a key to learning. The Sonday Systems each build upon each other that leads to greater student success.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 56

Due to the impact of COVID-19 we were unable to implement the materials that we purchased with this grant. We will begin using these materials the beginning of next school year and the years to come.  We will use this system as a follow up from the Sonday System 1.

The intended outcomes for this was replacing our current Tier 2 instruction with Sonday System 2, which is a systematic, sequential, multi-sensory reading support. We will use this daily in our small groups to reinforce the big five reading components of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. With the use of the Sonday System, our students will gain necessary reading skills in order to be a successful student across the curriculum.

We are very thankful for the awarded grant and intend to use it to increase our students literacy. We look forward to applying and recieving more grants to enhance our students learning in the future.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My school prides itself upon academic success, and we realize that the foundations of that success come from a strong foundation of reading skills. Unfortunately, what we are finding is that some of our students have gaps that have not yet been filled when it comes to their basic skills in reading.

What will be done with my students

If we are awarded this grant, we will replace our current Tier 2 instruction with Sonday System 2, which is a systematic, sequential, multi-sensory reading support. We will use this daily in our small groups to reinforce the big five reading components of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. With the use of the Sonday System, our students will gain necessary reading skills in order to be a successful student across the curriculum.

Benefits to my students

Currently there are thirty-six students, three teachers and three paraprofessionals that would benefit from having the Sonday System 2. This Sonday System 2 will remain with the 5th grade teachers. Therefore many more students will be impacted throughout the years. By the end of the year, 80% of students that use the Sonday System will show an increase on their STAR Reading Assessment.

Budget Narrative

The budget includes one Sonday System 2 Intervention Kit with flash drive that totals at 1295.00, and two Sonday System 2 Flash Card Bundles that can be used in small group activities and individualized assignments.
