Walton Education Foundation

I am in desperate need for some 5th grade level and above books. I have lots of great readers but not enough books at their high levels. I will purchase books that have positive reviews, are at a high reading level, and appropriate for 5th graders.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 110

Between August 10, 2019 and February 7, 2020 the 110 5th grade students had checked out 957 books, an average of 159.5 books per month of school. After the Young Adult (YA) books were purchased and added to the collection in February, the 5th grade students checked out 283 books, an average of 188.6 books in 1.5 months. Due to COVID-19, students were not able to access these books after spring break (March 13, 2020). During the time that the new YA books were available there was a new excitement about having a special section of the library just for 5th grade and the type of books available. Students who did not normally check out books would check out these YA books. Their use of the library and interest increased. Unfortunately our time was cut short due to COVID-19. I feel that the number of books checked out by 5th grade would have continued to increase for the remainder of the year. I know they will enjoy them next year and for many years to come. Thank you for supporting reading!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I am in desperate need for some 5th grade level and above books. I have lots of great readers but not enough books at their high levels. I will purchase books that have positive reviews, are at a high reading level, and appropriate for 5th graders.

What will be done with my students

6 classes of students will be affected! I will purchase books that are Young Adult and labelled as such. This will create a special section for these advanced YA books. These books will be at a higher reading level than books we currently have.

Benefits to my students

Currently there are not enough interesting and high level books for 5th grade students. I have a limited selection and students do not want to read the books I have. I need new, engaging, popular, highly rated, challenging books for them. This will motivate them to read. Plus special YA books that are just for 5th grade will be an exciting motivator. The more they read, the more they learn in all subject areas. Please support my high readers in growing!

I will evaluate my project by tracking the number of books checked out to 5th grade students. If the number increases so students are checking out new books each class time, then it will be successful.

Budget Narrative

I will order books from Follett, totaling $1,000.00. These are high quality, hardback books from multiple publishers. Included in the cost will be a small fee for processing the books, which allows them to be ready for students to read quickly.
