St. Joe Community Foundation - $992.81
My students need opportunities to help them learn how to collaborate and work together in the classroom. We expect them to work together with their peers every day without ever teaching them how to do this. They are asked to think critically, collaborate and communicate with others, all while being creative. This is a very tall order for children who come from different cultures and have different belief systems.
By focusing on collaborative skill building, students will build a greater sense of community and reduce the conflict that occurs while working with a team. The levels of student engagement will increase. Introverted students will learn how they can contribute to the success of their team. The goal is to boost student productivity and success while working on a team.
By purchasing the supplies requested below, students will be able to work in teams of 3 or 4 to learn the necessary skills to collaborate and cooperate with peers, teachers, and others using technology to solve problems.
Currently 21.9% of our students fall below a passing level on our district math tests. By implementing these collaboration activities with students we will raise their problem solving abilities so we have less than 10% fall in this category.
Using the Big Book of Team Building Games, students will be introduced to activities to build a sense of community with their class. Once students understand how to work with a team, other collaborative games will be used to practice the skills. Students will participate in at least one activity every month to continue to develop their skills through the whole school year. Team meetings will be held after each activity to discuss what worked well and challenges the students faced during the activity. Students will develop a set of norms for working with a team and a list of strategies to use to solve conflict within their team.
By introducing our students to collaborate games, they can learn the rules of how to work together in teams. Most children love playing games, but not all are given the opportunity to play games with their friends. We want to provide opportunities for our students to interact with each other in a positive, engaging activity that will also help build their social skills with others.
Starting early will help build collaboration skills in our students before they leave elementary school. Teams of students working together help build strong communication skills. Addressing new challenges forces students to learn how to develop listening skills and how to evaluate alternate solutions to challenging interactions with others. Building these skills will help the children to build a sense of community that can also spread outside of the classroom into the community around us.
