Walton Education Foundation

My goal is to increase learning and productivity in reading within a multi-grade level special education classroom. There are often multiple grade levels in my classroom at the same time, therefore I meet with a small group of students to give them the individualized instruction they need. This leave the remainder of the students in my classroom, to work independently. Independent work is very challenging for the students I work with. They either are unable to complete the work correctly or repeatedly interrupt the small group of students I am currently working with. This results in none of my students getting the individualized instruction they need.
The students that I work with are multiple grade levels behind their peers in both reading and math. The 4th grade reading students I work with are reading on a 1st to 2nd grade level according to the district STAR reading test. My students need repetition and reteaching of new concepts in order to grasp new skills. Through the use of iPads these new concepts will be reinforced with the assistance of the online programs the district provides for struggling students. These programs, such as iReady Compass Learning and Moby Max, also give teachers weekly updates on students performance and skill mastery. Therefore students can be monitored and held accountable for their online learning. The goal is that my students will be able to increase their STAR reading grade equivalent through the use of these online programs in order to close the academic gap between them and their grade level peers. An increase of half a grade level would be expected for the 3rd and 4th graders I serve.

What will be done with my students

I am asking for iPad for my students so they will to be able to have access to online programs to increase their learning and productivity. At my school we have many online programs designed to meet students at their individual levels such as iReady, Moby Max, Compass Learning, and more. This grant would serve the current students I have in my classroom and the subsequential students I serve in the years to come. I currently only have 8 students that I serve however, last year I started out with 6 students and ended the year with 14. I have no doubt that the number of students I will serve this year will increase again by the end of the school year.

The iPads received from this grant will be used on a daily basis during the ELA reading block. During this time I have both 3rd and 4th grade students in my classroom. Their needs and reading ability vary greatly. Therefore in order to serve these students I must meet with them in a small group setting to individualize their instruction. This leaves other students in need of a task they can implement independently. Finding independent tasks that are productive and can be completed by my students is a challenge. I want their independent learning time to be productive and fun. That is where the iPads come in! Through the use of the online programs provided by the district my students can learn, be independent, and have fun all at the same time! Their learning will be monitored through weekly updates provided by the online programs.

Benefits to my students

The benefit of iPads for my students would be an increase in productivity and allow them individualized instruction even while I meet with other students. Being able to work independently on an online program would increase the amount of personalized instruction and increase their ability to be independent. Not to mention we live in a tech driven society and many of these students learn well from online programs.
The students' performance will be monitored through weekly updates provided to me by the individual online programs. I will be able to track my students performance on a weekly basis. The increase in performance and reinforcement of skills being taught on a daily basis through online learning should be reflected in an increase of their STAR reading grade equivalent by the end of the 2019-2020 school year.

Budget Narrative

I am asking for 3 iPads, with child protective covers, and headphones to go with each iPad.
