Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 112

Dear Chelco,

Thank you for funding this grant for the Who Was? What Was? Where Is? series of books. This grant was originally requested by Leslie MacPike. When Mrs. MacPike left Emerald Coast Middle School in December 2019, my students and I became the grateful recipients of this wonderful set of books.

This series consists of stories of an array of people places and events, and details the stories of trailblazers, legends, innovators and important events in history. My students enjoyed learning more about such people as Martin Luther King, Jr., and places such as The Great Wall of China, just to name a few. My students only got to use these books for a few months prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, but I did see an increase in their reading and their overall grade. I also heard students' excitement when they discovered the details about people or places and they enjoyed relaying the information to me by asking me if I knew those details.

I know that future students will also enjoy this series and these books will continue to ignite the passion for reading that will stay with the students long after they leave the classroom. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Helen Mitchell

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal: Ignite a passion for reading in my 6th grade students! (And help them reach their reading goals in the process!)

What will be done with my students

Students will read books from the "Who Was? What Was? Where Is?" series and complete accompanying literacy tasks and activities throughout the entire school year. (Standards-based lesson plans with suggested assignments, writing prompts, and extension activities are available for free on the "Who Was" educator website. There is also a "Who Was" TV show that can be used as a supplementary resource.)

Students will take an Accelerated Reader test after reading each book. Because this AR program calculates word counts, these books will help students reach individual quarterly word goals and the year-end goal of a million words.

Benefits to my students

All 125 of my students will benefit from having a classroom library filled with "Who Was? What Was? Where Is?" books because they will WANT to read them! Research shows that students need to read a million words a year in order to keep up with peers and maintain academic standards. How do we reach this goal? Get students excited about reading! (And that's exactly what these books do!) The series contains the stories of a vast array of people, places, and events in the most accurate of ways. With over 200 titles, the "Who Was?, What Was?, and Where Is?" books tell the incredible stories of trailblazers, legends, innovators, cool places, and important events. 6th graders love reading these books and therefore will benefit by having them readily available for reading consumption!
