Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 8

Dear Grant Investors,

Thank you so much for fulfilling my grant for Accelerated Reader books.  I was able to order these books from Scholastic and use them for several months in my classroom before the quarantine began.  The students were so excited when the boxes of books were delivered to our classroom and they have really enjoyed them.  They read them daily, write a weekly book report, and take an A/R reading comprehension quiz. I wish you could see the smiles on their faces when they pass an A/R quiz.  I will be able to use these books for many years so please know that they will be put to good use and are much appreciated!

Thank you so much for your generosity,

Kendra Boles

Original Grant Overview

Goal

By the end of the current school year, my students will demonstrate independent reading ability and passage comprehension on literature passages as measured by Accelerated Reader software, weekly book reports and Star Reading assessments.

What will be done with my students

My middle school ESE students enjoy independently reading books each week. Every Friday they write a book report and take an Accelerated Reader quiz over their books. We also incorporate projects such as drawing a book cover or creating a paperbag that demonstrates characters, setting, etc. and then giving an oral presentation about the book. All of my students require books on an A/R level of 0.1 - 3.0. Unfortunately, middle school libraries do not stock these levels so we have to rely on my minuscule classroom library.

Benefits to my students

Creating a classroom library will benefit my ESE students for many years. The books will be used weekly for book reports, comprehension quizzes, writing projects, recognizing figurative language, determining theme/setting, describing characters, making inferences, increasing fluency, etc.

“I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.” – Roald Dahl

Budget Narrative

I am requesting Scholastic Accelerated Reader book collections for my students' levels of 0.1 - 3.6 which are not available in our middle school library. These books will coordinate with our current Accelerated Reader software to test reading comprehension.
