Walton Education Foundation

As educators, we are always searching for ways to promote the love of reading with students. Our students currently have 20 minutes each day of DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read) in our classroom. This is a sustained silent reading time the students absolutely love. We have books from our library to read, but we also have access to a computer program known as epic. Epic gives students access to 35,000 eBooks. These books can be used as comprehension monitoring through Accelerated Reading assessments which students are rewarded for according to the number of points they earn each nine weeks by ourselves and our school. Epic also has some books that can be read aloud to children. According to www.readaloud.org , reading aloud to a child promotes language skills as well as literacy skills. Only 48% of young children in our country are read aloud to each day. Our goal is to purchase iPads to create the opportunity for more students to have access to epic during our daily DEAR time. These iPads can give 5-6 students daily time to read and be read to during sustained silent reading time.

Goal

These iPads can give 5-6 students daily time to read and be read to during sustained silent reading time.

What will be done with my students

Each day, 64 students will participate in DEAR time. Students will be grouped so that 1 group will be given iPads to read through the Epic reading online program. We will assign and monitor reading of 2-3 books each week. While students are reading, we will conference with 4-5 students to discuss their reading from the previous week. We will also discuss the accelerated reading assessments they have taken from the Epic story that was assigned.

Benefits to my students

Our students will benefit from sustained silent reading, being read aloud to, and developing a love of reading and learning about topics they are interested in. Another benefit is that students will not have to spend class time going back and forth to the library to check out books – our students will have immediate access to a world of reading.

Budget Narrative

We are requesting the purchase of 5 10.2 inch iPads for the use of sustained silent reading time with students.
