Goal

To increase grade level Science proficiency from a class average of 46% to 80% by the end of the 2019-2020 school year based on the 5th Grade Science Benchmark Assessment.

Science is a subject that requires students to be highly engaged and participate in guided and independent inquiry investigations to develop a true understanding. With the abundance of information and variety of resources that are available digitally, incorporating technology into science inquiry, allows students to develop a deeper understanding of concepts.

What will be done with my students

Students will participate in multiple research projects and assignments related to 5th grade science topics to develop increased proficiency. Some of these projects include:

1. The Organ Systems - In groups, students will research and build presentations of one of the body's organ systems (i.e. nervous system, respiratory system). Groups will create a digital presentation, using PowerPoint, Prezi, or Sway, to demonstrate their learning and teach their peers.

2. Students will work independently to research family preparedness plans for natural disasters and why these plans are necessary. Students will develop a personal family preparedness plan based on the research that was conducted.

3. Students will complete a WebQuest in which they learn about and explore a variety of examples of chemical and physical changes. Students will watch videos, read articles, and look at pictures to determine the type of change and why it happened. Students will answer guiding questions along the way to demonstrate proficiency.

2. Students will use StudyIsland.com to learn, assess, and remediate science topics throughout the year.

Benefits to my students

My goal through this project is for students to develop a deeper understanding and develop 80% or more proficiency of 5th grade science standards.

By using technology to support my science instruction, engagement and rigor will be increased. In order to truly prepare students for their futures, technology integration is critical. The 21st century classroom should include students collaborating with each other on a variety of projects. These projects should be supported with technology by incorporating research, design, and inquiry.

Technology also allows teachers to differentiate instruction for a variety of learners. Students are able to demonstrate their learning in a way that is conducive for them.
