Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 700

My students LOVED this project.  The students loved coming into the library to get their brag tags.  They would see me in the hallway and tell me which book they had read.  It was wonderful to see the excitement of my students.  My teachers have already begun asking if we are doing the project again.  I am pleased to announce that I am continuing this Brag Tag promotion this school year with new books and new brag tags.  Thank you so much for your support of me and my students.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal for Brag Tag is to promote reading through positive reinforcement. By May of 2021, students in my school will pass 2500 Accelerated Reader tests on Sunshine State Reader Award books.

What will be done with my students

Students will be encouraged to read the 2020-2021 Sunshine State Reader Award and Sunshine State Reader Award, Jr. books. Each time they read one of the Sunshine State books, students will take an Accelerated Reader test. Students who pass the test with an 80% or higher will receive a brag tag that contains a picture of the book's cover. Students will be able to proudly display the tags on a chain necklace. This project will begin as soon as funding is secured and continue through May of 2021. These books will be promoted weekly by the media specialist through emails to teachers and on the school's morning show program. Sunshine State Reader Award books have been chosen for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation.

Benefits to my students

Benefits of Reading: Why You Should Read More on https://jrelibrary.com/ says, "Reading expands your vocabulary. The more you read, the more words you’ll be exposed to. Consistent exposure to new words, learning their meanings and seeing the context in which they’re used will increase your mental dictionary." One goal of our school improvement plan is to increase student vocabulary. My goal is for students to take 2500 Accelerated Reader tests on Sunshine State Books. All 661 students and 40 teachers will be encouraged to participate in this reading incentive program.
