Walton Education Foundation

This year, more than ever, our school has a strong focus on intervention. As we know, students were out of school for five months in very uncertain times. This led to a pause, if not decline, in academic growth for students. Our school goal, and my goal for this grant, is for 80 percent of students to achieve learning gains this year. That means that 80 percent of my students will make a year’s worth of growth this school year, as evidenced by the STAR Reading and Math Assessments. In order to meet that goal, these iPads will be used individually by students during math and reading intervention time for specific programs that will meet their learning needs. The programs utilized on these iPads will allow for immediate feedback and teacher intervention. The goal for this, “Individual iPads for Intervention,” is to target the learning needs and gains of all students, from students learning the English language, to gifted students, and every student in between.

Goal

What will be done with my students

As I said, intervention is a strong focus for our school this year to ensure that we help students catch up with the time and learning that they missed. Our school has in place an hour of reading intervention every day. I have also implemented math rotations that provide math intervention time every day. During these times, the teacher is only able to meet with a group of 4 to 6 students for teacher led intervention. The remainder of the students are assigned programs on the iPads that meet their learning needs. As of right now, my class has 12 iPads, some of which are so old that they do not work well. I have 17 students in each of my two classes. These three additional iPads would allow my students to have greater, and more quality, access to these individualized intervention programs. My class was lucky enough to receive three iPads last year and the difference that it makes to our classroom is astounding. The students never have an issue with the new iPads and are able to complete a full session on their programs. However, my students that are assigned the old iPads are always struggling to get their intervention programs to work. These devices would be utilized in a small group setting and whole group setting. They will be used at least twice a day, including during the hour of reading intervention for students not meeting with the teacher and during math rotations for fifteen minutes for each student. Students also love using their iPad for individualized intervention programs whenever they have completed their work and have free time. Described below are some of the individualized intervention programs that would be utilized daily.
During math rotation time every day, students use the technology program Zearn on the iPads. Zearn follows the same curriculum as our Walton County math curriculum, Engage New York. This program can be individualized for intervention by allowing me to assign specific lessons to certain students based on their learning needs. I can even assign lessons from higher or lower grades for intervention or enrichment depending on my students’ level.
During daily reading intervention time, the students use the iPads for Compass Learning Reading and Freckle Reading. Compass Learning Reading allows for teachers to assign reading standards from any grade to each individual student based on their learning needs. Freckle Reading has the students take a pre-test and then provides lessons and standards to fit their learning needs.

Benefits to my students

The benefit from these additional iPads will be greater, and more quality, access to the individualized intervention programs that I described above. Not only will students be able to visit these programs more often throughout the day with the additional devices, but the devices will actually work long enough for them to complete a lesson or activity. I can understand the student’s current frustration that their devices are kicking them out of the program or not saving their work. I know that the programs mentioned above have been proven to increase student’s STAR scores, as I have used them for the past three years. Access to these individualized intervention programs will benefit all 34 of my students, from the struggling students to the students above grade level. As a result, I hope to reach my goal of 80 percent of my students achieving learning gains this year and in future years to come. The additional iPads awarded from this grant, in combination with the programs listed above, will continue to benefit the individual learning gains of my students every year.
