Walton Education Foundation

My goal is to acquire more assistive technology to help my students achieve learning goals and increase their reading skills.

This year my students are working with the online reading program Compass Learning. This program encourages practice with writing skills and reading comprehension that aligns with the English Language Arts Florida State Standards. Students work at various levels based on their individual needs. I am also able to assign practices that will provide enrichment or intervention for each student. Learning is differentiated for each student. With students alternating between traditional classroom learning and distance learning, it is important to utilize this platform authentically. The student population makeup in my specific classes necessitates that I provide intense remediation.

My ELA classes consist of 40 students all at varying levels. 20% of my students are classified as ESE or are on a 504 plan. 28% of my students are classified as Tier 2 or 3 and are receiving various interventions. Having extra laptops in my classroom will allow me to help meet the accommodations, interventions for these students, and differentiate their instructional needs. These students need all of the extra support and time they can using the online programs to improve their FSA and STAR scores in ELA.

What will be done with my students

My students will work on Compass Learning assignments that are individualized to meet each students' needs. Students will track their growth. With the laptops I am requesting, students will engage with Compass Learning during our school intervention and enrichment time. Our school is implementing this one hour a day to provide rigorous instruction and interventions for all students in ELA. During this time, students rotate at various stations, including Compass Learning. While some students are working on Compass Learning, I am providing small group instruction in ELA.

In order to help my students succeed and improve their reading skills, the laptops will provide extra time with online reading programs and allow me more time to work with students in small group while other students are engaged in an engaging ELA program.

Benefits to my students

The benefit of having three additional classroom laptops will allow me significantly increase the number of students actively engaged in an online reading program that is individualized to their needs. Having students engaged in online learning will provide me more time to work with small groups during intervention and enrichment time.
