Goal

The goal of “Engaging, Empowering, E-books!” is to promote the reading of electronic books by purchasing new eBooks to add to our school's database media collection. By May of 2021, at least 50% of the 1st – 4th grade students (approximately 300 students) at my school will check out and read at least 2 electronic books (eBooks).

What will be done with my students

My 1st – 4th grade students (approximately 550 students) will be challenged to read eBooks. Each time a student reads an eBook, they will write down the title of the book along with something that they learned or enjoyed from the book they read on a decorative cut-out and add it to a display in the school hallway. The students will be encouraged to tell a friend about the book and challenge them to read eBooks as they watch our display grow in the hallway. Students that are currently attending school as Innovative Learning Digital Academy (ILDA) virtual students (approximately 50 students), will also have the opportunity to check out and read eBooks in order to participate in the school display. After the students read the eBooks, they will be able to take Accelerated Reader (AR) tests on these books to help them to achieve their AR Reading goals.

Benefits to my students

Electronic books are convenient and easy to access. To many students, they are more engaging than print books. Good quality eBooks include features that promote children’s language and literacy skills. These features include a read-aloud feature, highlighted words which help model reading and assist the students in following along, an interactive glossary, note-taking features, as well as interactive games and embedded videos that help explain the information contained in the text. Children with developmental delays benefit from eBooks. These eBooks help them to build and increase their vocabulary while providing an engaging format where they can become better readers. The purchase of eBooks is an extremely good investment because these books never get lost, worn out, or damaged. Electronic books are also beneficial for virtual students who are not able to come to the school’s media center to check out books. If schools should ever be required to move to virtual again, having a large collection of electronic books will provide students with a great selection of material to read while they are homebound. The engaging eBooks that will be ordered include topics that are relevant and that will interest a variety of readers. These books will help promote STEM education as well as help students to learn about diverse cultures. An educator's job is to empower our students with 21st Century skills that they need to be successful in school and in their adult life. Providing electronic books and encouraging students to learn to read them will help my students become life-long learners in our ever-changing digital world.
